Does anyone drive a mini truck (a small pick up truck from Japan, also known in Japan as kei-truck)? If you don't know what one is they are:
Suzuki Carry
Daihatsu Hijet
Mitsubishi Minicab
Honda Acty
Subaru Sambar
They come in 4WD and 2WD. Anyways, this isn't a sales ad, I'm just curious.

They really need to get an American nickname for those types of trucks, rather than confuse them with the typical mini trucks (Mazda B series, Toyota Tacoma, etc)

I saw one the other day here in edmonton, not sure what brand it was, they all sort of look alike (especially in white) but it was a tire shops delivery truck I think, they had rims on it, and it looked not too bad..
And I think mini trucks is the perfect name, I've never heard those others called minis.. I grew up always calling them 1/4 tons.. But nowadays they are growing out of their size range...

There's an entire custom industry based on the minitrucks I mention that's been going on for a few decades.

I'm not saying it's wrong, but I doubt I'm the only one that makes the association

Thanks for the link, but the mini trucks I was talking about are even smaller. They are only about 3.5 m long. They hold 350kg of cargo in the back (or more if you adjust the suspension).
What people are probably seeing are Suzuki Carrys, Mitsubishi Minicabs or Daihatsu Hijets. They're the 3 more popular brands we export to Canada.

The first of these I had seen in Canada were in Parksville on Vancouver Island. There are a couple of importers there who is known for bringing in Delicas but they had a couple of what looked like Mitsubishi micro-trucks too. I don't know if it was a Mitsu or not but I saw a lady driving one on McKnight the other day.
Kind of wish I had an excuse to get one but i don't think I'd want to run head-on into some of the beasts we have on our roads

Those trucks really arn't mini trucks. They are light trucks. I would say mini trucks are slammed S10's, mazdas, tacomas, etc. IMHO
I used to drive a mini truck. 4-6 dropped S10. Damn that was a fun truck, I regret selling it...

I don't know who coined the phrase "mini truck", but it does get confusing with the other, original, mini trucks like the ones you described.
Personally, they should be called light trucks, or atv trucks for the US, since they're only imported as off-road vehicles in the US. For Canada, they would appropriately be named supermini trucks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermini_car
