I love this website, no matter my question, you're all great help, thanks :)

For those who live in Calgary, what a pretty city. My brother lives in the NW, close to Bearspaw.

Question for you all, why is your downtown practically empty? I was there the first week of October, and I went downtown with my bro on a Saturday afternoon, it was empty. I thought that was odd, because in Toronto downtown is a complete mess.

Loved the Cowboy trail (hwy 22).

Why do people randomly slow down in the left lane on Dearfoot?

go downtown during a weekday

People slowdown in the left lane on deerfoot because they are r-tards and dont know how to drive

yeah downtown here is not as lively 24/7 as the other big cities in Canada. dowtown lunchtime and stampede are the busiest times probably.

:werd: and whenever you see an accident with emergency crew already on scene, be sure to slam on your brakes, that's just Calgary driving courtesy.

Hope you had a great time in Calgary... I'll be in Ontario this weekend.

Calgary Population - just under 1 Million

Toronto Population - 2.5 Million

And yes, weekdays are pretty busy downtown!

i dont consider us a true big city in terms of population

you cant compare a great big city like toronto to calgary

But either way you are correct.

second cup downtown on 5&5 closes at 5, not open on weekends. downtown is only really used for work, people go there to work then go home and sleep.

maybe in 10 years it will all change.

Up until recently, there weren't many people living in and around downtown Calgary. It was work only. that is starting to change due to the major inner city condo projects, but changes like this take a lot of time.
For example, think about shopping. There isn't much downtown that you can't buy at one of the malls, and let's face it, most of us would have to drive past a mall just to get downtown. Doesn't make much sense to do your shopping there.
Fine dining, heck even casual dining is the same story.

Coming from Winnipeg, but living in a few cities across North America, I must say that Calgary is:

-Clean and has a relatively low crime rate
-Grew at an astronomical pace which now attributes growth pains that other cities have faced stemming from social and economical problems through to even infrastructure problems
-Young - based upon general demographics
-Active
-Has been flooded with commercialism and does not have a urban social scene which is more prevaliant in larger cities, such as Montreal, To & Van
-The wealth gap has now been established and leaving a large margin between the poor and rich

Sounds like I'm a left wing activist, but I am far from it. I am the kind of person who came and has been to cities which have experienced and are living in hard times

What I have identified above should and will be delt with through time and our City's\Province's budget and private programs

When it comes down to a community and social lifestyle, I must say that Calgary is starting to establish itself.... But it is not uncommon to expect restaurants and stores to be closed by 10:00 PM
Work hours are normally defined as a typical 8-5, however I think with the "old west" mentality, that you'll find alot of people who prefer rising before the Sun and leaving while its still up

This city have people made of gold, including the ones who have left their homes in the dreams to live a better life.
In my case, this has come true, as I have never been happier.
However there are a number of people who have an expectation that the city is lined with gold and are out to either 1. exploit or 2. be automatically entitled to the good fortune that others have experienced

This has lead to our large wealth gap and ever growing vagerant population.

I've been here for about six years and have lived here off/on for the last fifteen (Freestyle Skiing program)
I remember walking peacefully through princess island park at 10PM after a few pints at the garage and never being hassled... days like this seem to have come and gone

What I am impressed with though, is the strength of the neighboring communities, and through that, not allowing the downtown core to "donut" effect... and in fact making it such so that areas such as Inglewood\Bridgeland etc... are more favorable and wealthy

Needless to say, it's a good city to fulfill your goals

Ohhhh, a lot of responses, thanks.

TomcoPDR: If you're coming to Toronto and it's your first time, don't drive on the 401 or the DVP/404 combo, they're usually crawling. Considering that I've lived here my whole life, I don't even use them. Other than that I hope you enjoy your stay :)

Realistically Toronto proper has between 4 and 5 million. I know for a fact that North York (a borough of Toronto, of which there are 6) has almost 1.5 million. Practically, however, there's no real sense in talking about Toronto unless you talk about the GTA. Having said that, the GTA is nearing 6 - 7 million in population. Its a disaster.

I noticed the cost of homes and condo's in Calgary, WOOOOOOOAH. Not quite as high as Toronto, but for a city of just over a million, I didn't expect them to be so high.

I do have high hopes for Calgary becoming more cosmopolitan, I suppose variety and activity come with increases in population.

You're forgetting that the GTA, of which Toronto is at the core, is over 5.5 million people.

Calgary is all about the suburbs. People work/shop downtown during the week and go home (and stay there) during the weekends.

Yeah, the leftlane loonies piss me off. They do that because they are stupid. :)
