Their machines are just sick, so hard to beat if you are going for screaming performance. Expensive, but you get what you pay for.

You can build it yourself for cheaper instead of paying for the "package deal".

I don't think Compaq come apart easily. I've heard that they're soldered together.

alien ware is the KING!! you have to be a computer nerd to understand it!! their cases are very detailed, the paintjob is very well done, the cooling is excellent, the cabling is clean, the service is amazing, and the way the sys is config gives out amazing performance! ( how they overclock the video card to a certain speed that will ensure greatest performance while the system will remain stable)
etc etc the list goes on!!! you really get whay you pay for!! but for 5k for a computer.. too much

Aside from a detailed and painted case, why can't you overclock your own stuff? :dunno: There is nothing special about Alienware. You can do all the stuff they've done (yes, minus the damn case) yourself. If you can't do it yourself, then you can't be a "nerd", as there is nothing to understand about why this brand name is better than anything else.

On a side note, this black case is available at Memory Express.

Is there extra hardware required to make the heat display functional?

Not as far as I know. I've thought about buying that case myself. I believe (and I could be wrong) that the temprature sensor is built into the case itself, everything is already built in.

Well, when they advertise them as "Alienware" style, I consider them knockoffs. They aren't exactly like them, but they are very similar. The attention to detail isn't as good as the real thing.

I think this new case is designed by/for Alien ware only.. but their old cases are by no mean original.. they used to use the Antec case and do custom work to them * ie paint job*

granted you CAN copy and build an exact copy of the Alien ware ( minus the case) for probably 30% less. But it can be a pain in the ass. they dont just get a video card O/C it to be max and therefor give u best performance. they specially tested the all the different speed for RAM/CPU/Video/mobo etc to ensure the best performance while the system still remain stable. if you want to do it yourself you'll have to do trial and error.

and of cuz dont forget the superb customer support

Why would you want to overclock anyways, you'll just need more and more cooling to keep everything from overheatings. And I dunno about you guys, but too many fans becomes too noisy. Not to mention you wear the card faster, etc etc etc. Unless you're a MASSIVE gamer, you don't need to overclock at all.

As for customer support, well, depends on how much you know about computers I suppose.

thats the beauty of this alien ware system!! the way they designed it, it is overclocked to full potential while it is still being cooled by a superb and quiet cooling system they designed.
and yes with a price tag of close to 5000 CAD, it is designed for HARDCORE gaming or those who like to compare Fps in lans party. Not for us who play an occasional CS here and there. Will it be cheaper to build a custom machine.. YES.. will it be cheaper to go buy a sony or dell or HP... YES.. but will you get such quality and performance.. hell no..
