I went and saw this movie today. I my self have not read any of the books, however the friend I went with has. He thought the movie was absolutely horrible. Apparently it's nothing like the books and they cut out all the good content (in the book two polar bears fight, the winning polar bear tears out the heart of the other one and eats it). The creators of the movie didn't stick to the plot of the book and changed it drastically.
Personally I didn't find this movie to be anything special at all.. I would save your $11.00 or just go to another film all together. This movie was a real let down to me as well and I have not read the books!
