also, brands (perhaps not specifically hp) have started to limit use of only black cartridges

for hp: rep said as long as a color cartridge is in there, the printer will be functional (yet to be proven by myself)
my old hp 3650 works tho, with only the black in there, not sure about newer ones

for epson: my friend's epson refuses to work with only black ink. both cartridges have to be above empty. and you guessed it right, the color and black cartridges together cost more than the printer lol

I've had my OfficeJet V40 for god knows how long.. many many years.. I stopped using it because I got tired of buying new ink.. when it gave me the ink warning I just kept using it until I literally couldn't see anything I printed anymore.

^^My brother inkjet won't even let me do that. Once in says that it's out of ink, it refuses to print, even though there appears to be 20-25% ink remaining in the cartridge and there is no fade when printing. Criminal.

HP isn't alone.

The EPSON inks for one of my machines is $1,048.50 to replace all ink cartridges. Right now a sale is on for $927 USD to replace the ink in that device. (500ml cartridges)

Another of my machines is a bargain (at only $510) - but the ink cartridges are half the size, so really it's still over $1k to replace ink in either of those machines.

My newest device - well, it's a premium on ink cost because it is new technology. It's $1,059.91 to replace the ink cartridges, but again it is only 220ml cartridges. So the price comparitively to the first EPSON in the list is $2408.00 for the same amount of ink.

Right, so HP is more expensive if it is 8,000.00 per gallon.

Because I'm only paying a little over $800.00 per litre. And what is that, about $3,200.00 per gallon?

*WOW*

And people think gasoline is expensive. Ha!

I must be using the cheap HP ink. My 410ml tanks are only 275. I gave up on my HP 9800 a long time ago, ink was just too much money.

I just buy a new printer when my cartridges run out. And I "Office Space" the old printer outside before it goes in the dumpster....

Same, it is a huge waste, but I'm not paying more for ink, when I can get the printer and the ink cheaper. :banghead:

I bought one of those kits with the syringes and ink....drill holes in the cartridge, squirt in ink. Cheap.

I'm guessing it only works for inkjet and bubble jet printers but that was the only way for me, as a poor college student, to get those papers printed and handed in!

Does that work just as well? I might start doing that, ink is stupid expensive. I usually just take it to a print shop, but no one likes going to kinkos at 2am for shitty quality lol

The only problems I ever had was if I waited too long to refill the empty cartridge and it dried out. I probably saved $500 by buying the kit $30 kit.

I also use the syringe + bottles. I can refill it in less than 2 minutes and continue with my work. As said above by david, you have to refill it ASAP or the cartridge will dry out.
