Hockey/Skate season, thought I'd make a thread for those who are new to Calgary and new to lake community skating/ city outdoor rinks.

Also, does anyone know if all Canadian Tire offer skate sharpening? :D

Edit: PLUS add in any other skate sharpening/hockey equipment stores and outlets (good / bad stories) Cuz I know I've had my skates messed up when I was a kid (no name shop attached to the arena, but we were in a hurry during a game)

Thx

I forget what Rapid-Rent-A-Ski is called now (Heritage and Elbow) but that's where I always got my skates sharpened and I never had a problem.

I don't think any of the Canadian Tire's do skate sharpening, but I could be wrong. Whatever you do, just don't take them to sport chek, they always seem to screw mine up.

Canadian Tire does sharpening, but just get a score more card from sportswap and get the 20 free sharpens.

So the answer is C.T. does skate sharpening as I remembered (skates were already sharpened when i bought last year, only skated 5-6 times with new skates)

taking your skates to canadian tire or sport check is like taking you car to canadian tire to get it fixed. its just retarded, those 16 yr old kids have no idea what they are doing and just fuck them up. take them to a pro shop like tuxedo/b&p/professional skate/adrenaline/blue chip sports etc. or you can go to the shop that i go to, its inside the arena in thorncliffe. larry, the guy that owns the shop has been doing my skates for 12 years. best sharpener ever

not necessarily, its mostly personal preference but its mainly up to your weight, generally speaking the lighter you are the deeper the hollow, vice versa with a heavier person

5/8 seems to be the standard that most places use by default, so that's what i've been using and it works fine for me.

Sportswap FTW!!! just tell them you want the 3/8's sharpen and they'll never fail you. super sharp.

also ive heard they do 20 for 20 bucks. i dont think ive ever sharpened my skates 20 times in one season though so ive never went for it.

The coin-op machines will do a better job than a kid who doesn't know or care about how to properly sharpen skates.

Done Right on 52nd St SE does a very good job on sharpening as for Sportschek, I can probably do a better job sharpening my skates with a rock.

Dont fuck around with your skates. Hands down Professional Skate, I think there is 3 locations (could be more) in the city.
