A bit of background:
I did own that stupid $120 Squire acoustic guitar before, but the action was so high that it hurt like a bitch to press even the simplest of chords. It pretty much turned me off from learning guitar; that was like 2 years ago.
Fast forward to today, and I want to learn again, but with a bigger budget in mind this time. I don't want to spend more than $275 if it can be helped, and definitely has to have a low action, and pickup as well.
So what are your guys' guitar recommendations for a newbie?

An A&L might run a little more. I paid 275 for a non-electric cedar top. (Either that, or I paid too much...:()

No, you're right. I picked up my entry level Art & Lutherie acoustic w. electric pickup for ~$350. But of all the lower end acoustic electrics, the A&L's had the best overall sound, both played solo or plugged in, hence my choosing. I found that Tak's tended to have a very tingy sound, and entry-level Yamaha's, well, IMHO, they sound worse than fart-can exhausts on 1.5L Civics! However, the A&L did have the highest action out of them all, but it's not a hard thing to fix anyway. And speaking of which, to the OP, why not just try filing your bridge(s) down on your Squire? Then when you get better, put that $2-400 you didn't spend on a new guitar for a better acoustic electric.

For under $300 you are going to get an acoustic electric that doesnt sound that great.
If good sound through an amp or a PA is essential you will probably want to spend a bit more money.
I paid 300 for my Washburn about 15 years ago.
D10 model.
I know the pricing isn't applicable right now but the guitar still sounds great.
no electronics though but a nice rich sound even after 15 years of parties and camping trips.......

Update: I ordered a Yamaha APX-500 Thinbody Acoustic Electric`in black finish. Spent $150+ more than what I wanted, but it plays really well, and feels great in my hands.

My dad has takamine guitars for his electric acoustics. He's always been quite happy with them.
