Looking for a more upscale steakhouse somewhere downtown for dinner. Somewhere that has a very cozy atmosphere and not outrageously priced. Any suggestions will be great.

Thanks!

Ric's Grill: $30-40

Earl's/Joey's: $25-35

Without breaking the "budget"? :dunno:

I like this place too. Can't remember the pricing. Atmosphere was good. You can sit in upstairs or in the basement (lounge area).

Chicago chophouse is amazing!! But you'll spend $35-45 for a steak. I don't know what you're budget is.

Caesar's has the best steaks vitange a close second. Vintage has far nicer ambiance though, I'd choose vintage ftw

Saltlik
Smugglers and Mother Tuckers are two that I enjoy as well.

OK I think I narrowed it down to two places.

Vintage

OR

Chicago Chophouse

Out of these two which one has the better food and better selection?

My girlfriend took me for dinner at Vintage chophouse for my birthday and I must say the food and the atmosphere is A+.

Expect to pay about $50/person at least.

LOL I was wondering when someone would mention Smugglers... :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: If you think Smugglers makes a good steak, you have a LOT to learn.

Isn't Chicago chophouse more like $50-60 after tax and tip?

It was about $200 per person when we went for our team Xmas dinner. That included lots of wine though. I like the little presentation that they do. Also the waitress wouldn't let me get my steak done anymore than medium haha.

^^ Apparentyl this a a pretty big Steakhouse Chain in the US, it is suppose to be great in the US, so I've been told by some of my clients.

Haven't heard much feedback about the calgary location though.

I'd say Ceasars, Chicago Chop House, and Teatro for their Prime Rib, unreal!

I thought the service was excellent. Too bad the food sucks. USDA corn-fed tastes funny and a steak shouldn't need to be swimming in butter to taste good.

I know in L.A. they have steakhouses where you can buy a huge chunk of Prime Rib for like $80 that would be enough to feed two people nd 2 drinks...

no one mentioned the Keg? I would prefer that to Earls.

Sometime sarcasm is lost over the internet... at least, I hope you were joking.

The Keg is expensive and slides further down the value scale when you compare quality at some of the better places... Caesars will cost 10% more, but the food is 50% better.

Agreed. People who trash talk The Keg are just getting in on the "I hate chains" bandwagon.

From personal experience The Keg continually cooks my steaks to perfection. I have eaten many steaks at many steakhouses in this city and the only one that is consistant is The Keg and Vintage Chophouse.

The Chicago Chophouse is one of the worst. The steaks I have had there have generally been cut poorly. Filet Mignon with fat or sinew are big issues for me and are unacceptable when paying $40 for a meal.

Ceasars has good cuts but they have no idea what the difference between medium-rare and medium is. I have to order steaks rare just to get something remotely close to medium-rare. When you complain you just get a dirty look from your geriatric waiter. I had a friend complain at the Keg about an under done steak (server grabbed the wrong plate) and his meal was free.

I work at the Keg, and if your steak isn't right we will make it right. Ie. if its under cooked we will throw it back on the grill or if its over cooked we will throw on a new one and usually try to compensate for it, ie. free drinks , free dessert. If the steak comes out not right the 2nd time, your meal is on us.

Vintage Chophouse.... Seriously... you wont be sorry:thumbsup:

I agree the steaks at Smugglers are shit nowadays, they used to be the best in Calgary.

Quincy's is pretty good too, but try Vintage first:)

I used to work there too! lol...

Good place, can't complain!

I'm not on the I hate chains bandwagon at all. I just don't like the Keg, because while I haven't tried many steakhouses here, Cattle Baron alone blows it out of the water.

Anyone ever go to Hy's?

I have been there a few times and seems as good as, if not better than Ceasars (IMO).

My wife and I just went to The Bears Den for our anniversary. Service was amazing, steak and all the other food we had were amazing, atmosphere was also incredible.. i would suggest it to anyone who wants a night to remember.. Price wasn't too bad with drinks, desert, appetizer w/tip $135.00 Steak and Pan seared Tuna.

I don't really have great experiences with the Keg

I really like Salt Lik, I always take guests there, it is nice that it is close to the tower as well. The undercooked my steak one time (of about 20 times I have been there) and they made it right. Plus those skinny fries.........     I have dreams about them

Vintage is really good as well. Can't really go wrong with either.

I was really disappointed with Caesar's. It was probably one of the juciest steak I've ever had but as for taste it was nothing special. Service is excellent though.
The Keg is not bad but the last few times I've been there it wasn't so great.
Salt Lik is pretty good. Good size.
Haven't tried Cattle Baron, Chicago Chophouse, Vintage, or Ruth's Chris. Vintage will probably be next as I've heard nothing but good stuff.
The last time I had a good steak was at Seven.

..bump..

got friends in town tomorrow want them to take em for a nice steak. need some updates if anyones been out recently

i've been to:

- ceasar's : good steak, nice cuts, but the place is to dark and retro

- vintage : maybe my expectations were to high cuz it was good but not the best i've ever had. nice atmosphere thou/

- ric's : good price, but i'd put them same level as a KEG

- Keg : good service, but average steaks, but always consistent i'll give em that

- ruth chris : i've been to many other locations, and i would say they are always consistent, but service was 50/50 here. i always like the sizzling plate it comes out on!

Haven't tried:
- Saltlik, maybe that'll be the choice but its franchise so i'd like to find something unique to Calgary.
- Wheres this cattle baron?
- Bears Den ? AAAA grade steak? really ?

Suggestions??
