Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The fastest-growing bet in the oil market these days is that the price of crude will double to $200 a barrel by the end of the year.

Options to buy oil for $200 on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose 10-fold in the past two months to 5,533 contracts, a record increase for any similar period. The contracts, the cheapest way to speculate in energy markets, appreciated 36 percent since early December as crude futures reached a record $100.09 on Jan. 3.

While analysts at Merrill Lynch & Co. and UBS AG say the slowing U.S. economy will lead to the biggest drop in prices since 2001, the options show some traders expect oil to rise for a seventh straight year. Demand will increase 2.5 percent in 2008, according to the International Energy Agency. U.S. inventories fell to a three-year low on Dec. 28. Production from Mexico is declining and Saudi Arabia is behind schedule in opening its newest field.

Good pre-cursor for the rest of 2008? What would push people to buy $200 calls, when the price is half that? Iran, perhaps?

That is amazing. I could see Oil hitting $200, but not within 2008.

All it takes is Iran and the US to 'step on each others toes'.

Nice, I hope it happens... that would really change the economics of a lot of green energy projects.

Solar would become much a better option with crude at $200.00, even over $100.00.

I would agree Solar would be a great invesment (i'm looking at some larger solar players right now), but Solar simply doesn't haven't the foundation/infrastructure yet.... it will take years for Solar to really gain a solid foothold in the market.

Its expensive to install too. I've heard great stories about it though, things along the lines of creating enough power from the panels to power your house, and put electricity back into the grid.

When you put electricity back in, your power company has to pay you for the power you put in.
