View Full Version : Barn Collapsed On My F*cken Car!

Uhhh... so I just got the worst fucking phone call ever. The barn where I was storing my MR2 (note WAS, not IS) fucking collapsed on my car. They can't tell the damage yet (since, you know, the barn collapsed and they cant get in), so I'm going down this weekend to have a look for myself.

I'm hoping that some divine miracle has saved my car. Hoping... otherwise I'm sunk... I'll never find another MR2 in that condition again. :(

Will get pics when I go down. I had fire/theft/vandalism on the car... I don't know if that will cover it. Though, since the barn is on the same property as his residence, I suspect that his home insurance will cover it... if not, I'm gonna sue the fuck out of him.

so did you just find some guy in the paper renting out his barn or what?

When I saw the barn is looked totally fine structurally- well maintained, etc. I don't know what made it collapse, neither do the owners. So far the owners have been very apologetic and forthcoming with information- we'll see if the car's destroyed, and if so, if they're going to willingly hand me a cheque for what the car is worth.

A friend of a friend. This is totally freak, and I'm not angry with him since he lost an entire fucking structure and gained one massive expense/headache, I only lost a car. I do hope he pays the value of the car though if it IS destroyed.

You should have had renter's insurance.
The owner of the barn isn't liable.

how much did he charge for storage?

$200/season. He had quite a few different vehicles in there, as well as boats and other things. Rest assured, I'm not the only one that will be upset.

As far as renters insurance, he isn't registered as a business nor am I technically "renting" any space since it's listed as personal property. We'll have to see where the legalities of this go.

Holy shit. I sure hope there were bigger things parked beside you that took that brunt of the damage and maybe offered a bit of shelter for your car.

Apparantly there was a massive ass boat right in front of my car. I'm hoping that it took the brunt of it- a little bit of body damage is better than the whole car being written off.

Not sure where you live, but if there recently was a large amount of snow that has fallen or accumulated on the barn's roof this is most likely the reason it collapsed.

Its been happening to alot of older homes, and barns, ect... out east this season. I've even seen people out shoveling their roofs as a precaution. Funny site to say the least.

It sounds like you still have comp on the car so your policy will cover it less your $250 deductible.

UPDATE: I'm going down tomorrow to see WTF is going on. Apparently they have the roof half-ass supported and from what they can tell the car is in decent condition- they are unable to determine if it has actually been impacted or not. By the time I get there tomorrow they will have excavated the roof and we'll know for sure.

As it stands, the friend of mine that recommended the storage place is real choked up about it even though I'm really not. I have mixed feelings- I love that car and of course I'll be upset if it's damaged, but at the same time, it's just a car and by no means was it anyone's fault. The snow caused the roof to cave in as we got about 9 inches of snow, and then it rained. A lot of the water stayed in the snow, causing the roof to collapse.

It's a freak accident and honestly I'm just hoping for the best at this point. I've already arranged other storage in an underground storage unit, but I am also considering putting it on the road as I happen to be in need of a vehicle. This is assuming that the car itself is undamaged or at least salvageable.

I'll get some pics of the damage tomorrow as well a better assessment of what the hell happened and why. Thanks everyone for the kind words :)

Technically speaking it's a wood-shop, he just calls it a barn since he's a farmer. It looks like a really long garage. Well... looked like a really large garage.

UPDATE

Well, somebody up there likes me. I get down there today and the first thing I notice is that the damage isn't half as bad as I thought it was to the barn. That being said, I believe the pics speak for themselves. The boat, combined with how close the wall my car was parked, are the reasons that my car escaped without even a scratch. As I said, somebody up there likes me.

I included some pics of other things that were in/around the barn, as well as some pics of the exterior- the whole friggin roof concaved...

The way everything was told to me I was under the impressions that the roof was literally ON my car. That wasn't the case, though it wasn't far off. Also, please excuse the pics... my camera sucks.

The last week we've had 10+ degree weather and rain. Initially, the rain held in the snow as opposed to have melted the snow essentially doubling the weight on the roof.

I'm so happy that it's okay... now I can put those new tail lights of mine to good use :D

Thanks everyone for your support. Things with me have been going quite well actually, despite some minor health issues (that are all solved now, by the way). My businesses are doing very well, so when I heard about the car I sank a little... but part of the reason I was so calm is because I have other things in life that are a larger focus.

Thank god the car's okay. I love this car.
