View Full Version : Universal Ford selling "new" vehicles with 2300km on them

HondaRice

My family ordered a truck from Universal Ford. they said it will take a few weeks. It arrived a few days ago, it appears they have someone drive it all the way from Mexico

They didnt deny it. we were not told. Is this normal? I never bought a new car before so i dont know how this stuff works.

That sounds straight up fucked… I wouldn't pay 'new' pricing for a vehicle that some random drove for 2400kms.

You've already probably paid, but is there a way to pull that money back? Sounds shady as shit.

syeve
01-15-2008, 12:44 PM
Yep, don't take that. My last car came with 6kms on it.

JRSC00LUDE
01-15-2008, 12:47 PM
It's no longer a new car, do not go through with it if you did indeed purchase a NEW car unless they sell it to you for the same depreciated price you would get if you were to buy a car and then decide to sell it 3000 km's later.

I got my truck with 80km on it. I think you got ripped off

R-Audi

A car can still be deemed as new as long as its never been registered... so it could be a dealer demo, dealer personal car.. or something related.

JRSC00LUDE

^

True but you usually know you are buying a demo and are compensated for the use in the purchase price.

Hamann
01-15-2008, 01:22 PM
I've heard of stuff like that happening, definetly talk to them about it, you can get the warranty extended i know that, but you should see if your family can get compensated for the 2400Km in some way, cause thats a little extreme for a "New" Truck

01-15-2008, 01:24 PM
When I worked at a leasing company, they considered a vehicle "new" if it had under 12,000 kms, so they would all drive their demos until that point and then sell/lease them as new vehicles. I'm pretty sure they knocked the price down a bit though... so it's all semantics. I'd ask for a price reduction, they just as easily could have shipped it.

5hift
01-15-2008, 02:02 PM
I would defenetely not accept it without some sort of significant price reduction, and threaten to bring it to the attention of local media consumer reports.

Some entry level wage individual drove it across North America. Its almost safe to assume it was bagged/abused.

I'd bet money on it... great way to break in a car!!

Also the first couple thousand are supposed to be the break-in period for the engine. Who knows how it was treated in that critical time.

wow just wow, that is shady. I purchased my truck and it had 64kms. I thought anything over 250kms was not considered new anymore?

yes someone drove it from mexico! my family didnt notice the KM till after we picked it up.

its funny, toyota makes its trucks in USA and Ford makes their trucks in mexico and drives them up there. We even had to pay a destination charge? for what!??

LOL You didn't notice until you picked it up? What did you say? "Oh look, 2300kms...must be a special edition!"

Wow.

TorqueDog

Anything over 1,000 KM is no longer considered 'new'. It's a 'demo'.

They dealer traded to get you a vehicle, problem is the vehicle they traded for was a demo.

In a dealers eyes, technically a vehicle is still new if it hasn't been registered.

Thats exactly what happened. It probably went something like this: The dealer in Fort Mac forgot to check the diesel option while he was ordering a few hundred trucks in the summer. When it hit the lot he realized and a few weeks later a dealer from Kelowna called him up that he needs that truck for a customer and a driver is on the way. The deal fell through in Kelowna (Customer may have changed colour choice etc) and and this loop could keep going until the Calgary dealer gets the truck for your dad. (It may have also been a manager demo for a few weeks beofre the dealer trade)

If its a reputable dealer (There are a few) they should have disclosed this to your dad. But once again managers who cover dealer trades 99% of the time disclose info (such as this) about a certain vehicle. Primarily b/c there is alot of gossip in the car industry and you also have to see these ppl once in while at meetings/shows/awards etc. Either your dad got screwed over from where he bought it or the other dealer screwed over your dealer.

Folks just so you know most new cars will have about 20-30km on them before you pick them up. The majority end up at the Ogden RR yard with 6 km on them already. Then they shuttle these vehicles to the dealerships. It's not uncommon to pick up a new car with 50-80km also b/c it may have been test driven a few times.

Ouch...

I turned down a "new" car from Mazda cuz it had 25km on it (5 of that was my own test drive). Told them I'd wait for a new one off the boat from Japan if i had to... They found me another one off the lot with 6km on it.

I don't know where you buy your new car from. All the new car I bought had less than 15km on it when I picked it up. And my 08 factory ordered 335i had 4.6km at delivery.

That's a complete rip off.. What happened to me with Universal is when I was looking for a Mustang they tried to sell me one that had a photocopied window sticker and over 700kms on it as NEW. I'm like.. UH no..

So I went to Maclin and bought one there that had 32kms on it.. that's the way it should be. :)

they don't DRIVE cars from Mexico to sell in Canada.. that pisses me off they would tell you that.. someone needs to go to the Calgary Sun with this story.. fuckers..

And yes you should never have a car on a highway within the first few hundred kms at constant engine speeds, your engine needs varying speeds to seal properly.

I don't think that's a very good excuse on why an article can't be published.. They are ripping people off.. it's fraud.. period.

legendboy
01-17-2008, 02:27 PM
no there not, because technically, legally, the car is still classified as being new

but they should have told u, u were getting a demo, and you should not have taken delivery of it

you ARE stuck with the vehicle now unfortunatly, and nobody is going to have any sympathy for you because you guys must have agreed to take it like that...

the milage was recorded on the bill of sale too

The dealers that I deal with always have dedicated demo vehicle for test drive. And when I buy a Brand new vehicle, I expect it to be Brand new.

Don't tell me you would be happy if a salesman let someone go test drive your Brand new vehicle before you pick it up.

dealer transfers are the most kms i've seen on 'new' cars which is like 30km, 2.4k is quite shady...

i remember the saying that the first 1k of how a car was driven determines the rest of its years, dunno if thats true, i know some dealerships tell you not the bag on your car for the first couple thou.

also demo cars and loaner vehicles from what i've seen are decomissioned to the used car lot after 10k.

Hey, dealerships don't drive vehicles from the factory to their store. Okay, maybe from Red Deer to Calgary, or something similar, in a dealer transfer, but no way they're driving them from Mexico.

Even with a demo, don't forget that as soon as somebody's driving the vehicle, the warranty period kicks in - so you've essentially lost 2300 km of warranty, in addition to getting a used vehicle. Plus I think the warranty in-service date kicks in if the vehicle is officially a demo, but I'm not positive...
