For the first time in Alberta, the Calgary Police Service has
laid a charge for unauthorized recording of a movie.
On December 21, 2007 at approximately 1:15 p.m., the Calgary
Police Service responded to a suspicious person complaint at
the Empire Studio 16 Country Hills movie theater at 388
Country Hills Blvd. N.E. Police received updated information
that a man in one of the theatres had been suspected of
unlawfully recording motion pictures in Calgary.
Outside the theatre, officers spoke with a member of a
security company that had been investigating the suspect for
the past six months on behalf of the Canadian Motion Picture
Distribution Association.
Officers then witnessed the suspect at the back of one of the
theatres; allegedly recording the screen with a concealed
camcorder.
Richard Craig LISSAMAN, 20, of Calgary is charged under
s.432 (1) of the Criminal Code with one count of unauthorized
recording of a movie.
This is the first time this charge has been laid in Alberta
and only the second time in Canada. The charge of
Unauthorized Recording of a Movie was added as an amendment
to the Criminal Code in June 2007.
Unauthorized recording of a movie is illegal. If you have any
information about illegal recording, call the Calgary Police
Service at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS
(8477). If you witness a crime in progress, call police at
911.
