It turns out that the rear seats don't fold and there's no trunk pass through either, due to a trunk located battery and wiper reservoir. This basically means the Evo isn't an option as a winter car, since skis won't fit in it.

There aren't many cars like the Evo, so it sucks to eliminate it from the shopping list over something stupid like this.

they should have kept to the evo 8/9 look, definitely looked nicer.
the car isnt designed to be practical though, and IMO there is definitely some work needed on the options.

That's like saying "Can't you turbo that $100K BMW to get 500HP that all of it's rivals have?" Yeah, you can, but the point is you shouldn't have to. Projectors are pretty standard business nowadays, I mean like Mazda 3's even have them. Come on.

There are a lot of cars out there with stock rear mounted batteries.. the cobalt SS is one of them. It still had fold down seats.

Well, a roof rack doesn't look great (they can only look good on E30s for some reason) plus it comes with the trade offs of wind noise and being forced to keep your nice new planks outside, subject to road salt and grime. Anyone who's tuned their own skis will know it's a battle to keep the edges rust free and sharp.

Weight distribution I think. Some BMWs are like that too. I wouldn't mind if the seats could fold down though...

Aleks
02-12-2008, 08:08 AM
Yes it's for weight distribution
The battery in my E90 was in the trunk and the car had ski pass through so that shouldn't be an excuse.

Forget the ugly stick, they brought out the stupid stick this time. How much weight can a battery offset? 20lb? Or am I just severely misinformed (large possibility hahaha)

Most batteries weigh at least twice that much. A lightweight Optima Redtop battery is 33 lbs.

Sales. The WRX has always been one of the ugliest cars on the road and now while it's a tad on the plain side it certainly isn't ugly. The EVO <IX weren't exactly sex to alot of people either so they went with a german (Audi) look that has garnered rave reviews from magazine journalists. At over $40K a pop for these cars you can understand why they targeted audiences that were a little more mature than your average Fast & Furious fan.

whats wrong with trunk located battery? Thats where mine is. Helps with weight distribution

FiveFreshFish

A trunk-mounted battery is hidden below the floor level of the trunk. It doesn't just sit there exposed and taking up cargo space. There's a positive terminal post under the hood for boosting so you don't need to go into the trunk.

Think that's weird? Some older Bimmers have their battery mounted under the rear seat.

Rocky
02-12-2008, 09:35 PM
How much do batteries weight nowadays? I don't think a trunk battery would make that huge of an impact in weight distribution...?

FiveFreshFish
02-12-2008, 09:38 PM
It weighs more than 1% of a typical car's total weight.

Attention to detail, every lb counts toward achieving the perfectly balanced car in the end.

Saw a vid once on a NSX-type R or something where the engineers switched out the leather shift boot for a mesh one to save a couple of grams in weight

lol I didn't know my battery weighs over 300lbs!

But I agree with the poster above that says every pound counts and moving the battery to the truck does help most cars get closer to a 50/50 weight distribution. I'm pretty sure almost every recent BMW has the battery in the trunk. We still get folding rear seats though. In the case of the Evo I would guess they don't have folding rear seats partly to save weight and also they may have a brace in there for extra rigity.

I didn't know the gtr was near a 53k pricetag... and i think a 53k pricetag is very reasonable for an MR Evo X. 4wd turbo with a performance close to a 100k+ car? Wouldn't get the nav though, thats too luxury for a track car. 53k is also around the pricetag of an STI. I dunno why you're saying a 335I has more class just because it's a BMW.

why do people insist on comparing the 335 to the Evo/STI...

yes they are the same price but they fit completely different niches in the market. the 335 being more of a luxury coupe than the others.
i would much rather have the 335 myself, but if i was shopping for the 335 i wouldnt be cross-shopping it with the evo/sti.

Paying $53 for a mitsu is like paying $45 for a Hyundai.

Somone will gladly pay it but just not me.

G35x or 335xi or c350 4matic will fit me better for around the same price.

End of the day, it's a econobox.

I don't know. The 335 isn't as nice as you may think it is.

The interior on the E9X is definitely a step down on the E46. I in fact cross shopped all of these vehicles and end up with a 335. I still may get the Evo... but someone has to buy my M3... haha
