My sister's friend is looking for a car, something reliable, and "good." She isn't picky, just something that isn't a piece of shit and will get her point a-b. Any ideas? I'm thinking of suggesting a late 90's volvo, but if you guys know of any good cars that fit the bill let me know.

A 96-02 civic would be perfect, and you can find the 01+ now for around 8k if you look hard enough. Reliability and gas mileage can't be beat

I found a few 1998-2000 civic hatch backs for $7000-8000 with 130,000 kms

Get her a JDM Al-trac. 4wd means safety in the winter, and its a fast & fun little car. You can get one from Terra2imports from anywhere from $6-9k for a good one.

Vote for default sunfire. Also add default flaming decal, seat convers from Canadian tire and have the boyfriend drive like a douche.

Because they are pieces of junk.
Why spend $8000 on a sunfire when you can get a more reliable/better built car for around the same price, if not less?

Truthfully, I say look for a 96-99 Civic hatchie. Great on gas, very reliable.

I won't suggest a jdm vehicle.

I have a Volvo I may consider selling.

It's a 1998 S70 T5 w/ low mileage (117, XXX)

Car is good conditon inside and out, fully loaded and recent maintenance has been done as well. I would probably want to list if for around $10,500 since its a T5 w/ low kms, I know this may be a little more than you were planning on spening but I thought I would throw it out there.

Let me know if your interested.

Thanks

If the taste is more towards volvo sized cars, then an Accord, altima, camry, maxima, beetles are cute, jetta or older audi a4. It's what she likes, looks are very important to a girl. Pick a style and year of car then check out carsurvey.org to see what people who own these cars think about them. If you don't know someone, or yourself are not very mechanically inclined then I would stick to Japanese.

I put my daughter into a 99 Sunfire GT with auto tranny and 127Kms for $3600...I thought I did well.
Fortunately no boyfriend to be a douche.
It gets her from A to B without issues!

I should mention that all the Jap products I looked at for 4 and 5 k were just complete junk....you'll need to spend 8k on anything decent!

I guess first thing she gotta look at, since her budget is only 8000, would definitely be a used car, so she gotta considered about the reliability of a vehicle. I would definitely pick a japanese import for 8000$. If u ever able to find a euro vehicle around 8000, either A is really old or B not so reliable. Volkswagen is absolutely a NO for a used vehicle. If u got time to look up on the rating on the consumer report, Volkswagen is one of the less reliable vehicle out of everthing in the market. She should considered sth like Honda civic, prelude, Acura intergra, 1.6el, 1.7el if possble, 99 and up TL, mitsubushi lancer. Basically getting japanese import would be the best choice for the bang for the buck for repairings.

Make her mechanically savvy and into cars. This is your chance to grow a future wife. Unless she's fat.

This is so true. AWD turbo DSM is always my first recommendation for anyone who asks - It's never too early to start learning about cars.

The only exception is if they are REALLY hung up on fuel economy ("I just need it to be good on gas"). Then FD RX7 for sure.

Always good to see more of these on the road.

get her a little 4wd pickup/suv (b-series, tacoma, blazer, rav4, forester.....) or a wagon (subaru outback, volvo, protege). You want her to feel safe and secure while driving and the above cars/trucks are not huge, so they can handle them, but have enough room in them they feel comfortable, they are mainly 'good' reliable cars, i would shy away from a cavalier just because so many people have them I don't think it will make her feel very special. To the knobs who suggested rhd cars and 240's or what ever, get a clue. I think your original thought of putting her in a good used volvo is perfect!

just took a quick look at cars that came to mind and honestly, as far as price and low milage with DECENT reliability... im throwing my vote for the sunfires

for 8 grand you can get a decent civic... but more than likely any jap car at that price will be low end... there will be a lot of Domestic cars with low milage sitting in that price range...

as that other guy above me somewhere posted, he got a cavi with like 1xx,xxx km for like 3500, cant really beat that.

My vote goes to the Honda Del Sol, ultimate girl car. Cheap on gas, removable top, .. just looks like an overall girls car as well, civic is always a good choice but maybe she wants something different?!

Miatas are good too, great little cars.

For $8000, I HIGHLY doubt you can find a decent CRV, Rav4, Pathfinder or just about any known jap SUVS. I don't know but Mazdas in my book are known to be not reliable, especially the older ones.

Newer Toyota Echos
92-00 Civics
90-01 Integras
Toyota Tercel ?? ;)

imo, the good recommendations were the three C's

You can get like 3 neons for $8k. Why pay that much for just a little 4 banger civic with 100hp when you can have 12 cylinders and 350HP.

I saw this in the herald today, seems like a good buy for you

1997 Acura 2.2CL, Original Owner, Black Leather, Sunroof, Loaded 103k, Well Maintained $8,900 o.b.o. 617-6545

That car has quite effeminate styling, but was a great car all around. It would be a great alternative to a Corolla, Camry, or Integra.

:werd: About the cheap suv's, good luck on that one, unless its a Katrina flood victum:dunno:

mazda = garbage. Do not buy a mazda, I had multiple one over the years, and I can really vouche for their unbelievable unreliability. :thumbsdow

^ Yeah man, you can get a mid 90's Sunfire for $1500 or so.

But I'd be VERY leary about buying anything GM/Ford thats pre 2000. I have a '99 Saturn SL2 as a winter car, and its unbelieveably reliable, 275k and still has yet to give me a stitch of trouble (been in my family since new).... but the Cavi's? yikes.
you may want to check out www.calgaryparking.com as some decent vehicles sometimes make it into the auctions for only a few hundred dollars.
