Not sure when this is effective but I guess Calgary is running out of numbers to use.
So it looks like we're going to be dialing 403 & 587 before dialing any numbers.

Now you need an area code to call your neighbours? And 403 is getting kept by the rich side of town???

kenny

New area code 587 will cover the area served by 403 and 780 area codes and will begin on September 19, 2008.

Oh so they're just splitting it up again?

Frick I wonder what that'll mean for calling in Calgary. Kenny do you have the link?

Basically 10 digit dialing for all calls, including local calls. By having the new area code cover the entire province, it means no one needs to switch area codes.

They should take out that fucking message you get then, when you dial 10 digits for a local call. Its like that stupid bitch on the phone is lecturing you for putting in those extra four numbers. Its fucking pointless. For fuck's sake, how do I know if Olds is long distance or not? I'm just going to dial long distance no matter what so I don't have to hang up the phone and try again when it tells me the number actually IS long distance. I don't need their fucking lecture, just put me the fuck through to the person I'm calling! Fuck!

I've been helping out with HR for the last few days and have had to make about 150 phone calls and I listen to this fucking message at least ten times an hour. I hate it so fucking much. They should take it out NOW so its not so fucking annoying to dial 10 digits all the time.

Why don't u just dial 1 in front of everything? That's what I do. You still get billed local even if you use a 1 in front of a local #.

I do dial 1, that is what makes it lecture you. If you dial it without the 1, like how I've got all my numbers in my cell phone programmed, it doesn't do it, but as soon as you hit the 1, it will.

why don't they just give the "east of deerfoot, north of glenmore" (from this point onward, i will refer to it as quadrant: EDNG) section of calgary a different area code.

It takes affect September 12, 2008. Starting in June 2008, callers who dial seven digits will be given a reminder that 10 digits will soon be required to complete a call.

yes this is a :repost:

This is pretty weak. Why dont' they just keep Calgary 403 and punish all the areas outside of the city with the new bunk area code?

no... its just that they are running out of numbers. look at vancouver for example: 604 and 778.

95% of my outgoing calls are on the BB. So shouldn't make too much of a difference since all my cell contacts have 403 already for texting.

no, you only get charge LD if you dial LD, you'll just have to add 587 or 403 to the front of every number you dial, everybody start updating your cellphone books.

Living in Vancouver put me in the habbit of adding area codes to every phone number in my list, that and I changed all my Calgary contacts to have an area code, it's really not the end of the world and will take about 10 minutes out of your life to put an area code infront of all your contacts, and let's face it, how many people here dial someone outside their cell contacts?

who doesn't add area codes to their phones when they add in numbers anyways?

i always do, makes it easier for txting people where i don't have their numbers memorized, or if im outside the city i can still call people without having to look up their number and try to memorize it and add a area code after

I add 403 in front of every contact as well. I dont think my caller id works without it LOL. Well at least that was like a couple of years ago, I just have the habit of putting 403 into everything now.

So, if I understand this corrrectly, my current number is 403-xxx-xxxx. If for whatever reason I add an additioinal line to my house after the new area code is in effect I'll end up with with 587 for the new number? As well, if I get a number with 587 on my caller id, it could be from anywhere in Alberta?

What happened to being able to identify where you're from by your area code?

well if calgary was a real ghetto like people claim , the new area code would have been 187 instead of 587.....

ok..so i haven't read the whole thread...but it sounds like to me that people are just bitching...cause places like Vancouver already have two area codes (and they are doing fine)...and have they tried calling places with china! they have like 10 numbers or something just in their phone numbers...not even counting the area code...

China's landlines have 8 digits (and an area code). Mobile numbers have 11 digits, but don't use area codes.

* UPDATE * OFFICIAL DATE SET.
Got this memo from work

Effective September 8, 2008, all residents and businesses located in area codes 403, 780 and 250 will be required to use ten-digit dialing. This means that you won’t be able to dial local calls using the traditional 7 digits; you will have to dial the area code first. Ten-digit dialing has been in place in the lower mainland of BC for several years, but this is new in Alberta and the rest of BC.

New area codes 778 in BC and 587 in Alberta will also be introduced at this time to open up millions of new phone numbers. Note: Not all new phone numbers in BC and AB will be 778 or 587; there will still be new 403, 780 and 250 numbers given out. Three-digit numbers like 311, 411, 611 and 911 will not change.

Beginning September 8, seven-digit dialed calls will not be completed and the customer will be advised to hang up and dial again, using ten digits. Ten-digit dialing must be enabled by June 23, but is not necessary until Sept 8th. Most Telecommunications providers have enabled ten-digit dialing already, including Shaw.

This change requires homes and businesses to update their:

- speed dial

- dial up Internet connections

- call forward programming

- databases/contact lists

- fax

- cellular contacts

- alarm system

In summary, anything with an auto-dial system must now include the area code.
