I took out a loan for 4000$ to buy a 1989 nissan 240sx abdout two months ago, the car worked fine until 2 days ago when there was a very bad rattling sound coming from the engine, and then it died on me 2min later. I took it to certigard and they just told me that i'm going to need major repair on the egnige or just buy a new one. Turns out this is going to cost me at least 2000$ and i still haven;t even come close to paying off the car yet. so now i am sooooo screwedand probally won't have money now for at least 3 months paying for the car that I can't even drive.:( :dunno: :thumbsdow :banghead: :banghead:

Ouch. Shitty deal, I guess that's the risk you take when you buy an older car and finance a big chunk of it. Doesn't leave you much cushion when the kaka hits the fan.

OK I know a guy in town that has a used engine for sale. If you're interested you let me know and I'll forward him an email. The engine was in decent shape. And that's pretty much what I know about the engine.

what "engine" work is required?

dont repair the old engine. I know that for my Talon i can get a used JDM engine with around 40,000km on it for 1500-2000. And that's JDM spec so slightly better performance. I would look into that if i were you. You will always have problems repairing an old engine. Might as well replace it for the money they want.

Now to chear you up, dont feel so bad. I bought my Talon for $5000 just 1 year ago, and up to today i spent around $5000 or more on repairs because i was stupid when i bought it and didnt have it checked out. So now i have a Talon worth $5000 that i put $10000-12000 into over only 1 year! It sucks man!

I'm guessing it's the timing chain and stuff (guides, tensioner...) that needs to be replace!

I also know someone that could swap the engine for you for a lot less than any shop in town.

Methinks you can't afford an SR20DET swap.

What exactly is wrong with the engine? Take it apart yourself, if you do all the work it won't cost you much at all. Any parts that need to be replaced can be found at a junkyard, KA24Es and DEs were in altimas, pickups, 240sx's, proabably in the vans and suvs as well.

I dont think the altima KA24DE will work very well as that is off of a FWD car, and the nissan pickup's KA24DE was different from the 240sx's ka24de (cam shafts I believe - though simple to replace, might as well just go for the ka24(d)e out of a 240sx).

I dont think the engine + swap will cost as much as $2000, probably more like $1500.. I'd suggest checking around calgary with all the people who do their sr20det swaps. pm sr20det95 or call autodream to see if they have a spare ka24de, or at least get one out of a swap they do for you.

No shit, just saying individual parts can be taken out of the engine. Most wrecking yards sell parted out engines rather than short or long blocks.

And I thought the pickup always had the KA24E in it, not the twin cams :dunno:

Personally what I would do is look for a nice KA24DE out of a later 240, it has more oomph than your original engine, so it'll be an upgrade, it'll drop right in (less work than opening up your engine) and it won't cost much more if any more than a complete KA24E replacement

I wasn't talking about an SR swap from him.....I'm sure he would know where to find a good used KA24DE:thumbsup:
