The date says "17th year, 6th month, 1st day".

The Japanese like to use years based on reigns of emperors. The current emperor came to power in 1989. 17th year means 1989 + 17 = 2006. It says that's when the belt was last changed.

Close...

1989 is the 1st year, so that's 1st. 17th would be 2005.

No, it's actually how much Japanese casually drive. :D

i think i read 97 (year) 6 (month) 1 (day)
the loop on the "9" is really really faint...
but then I could be wrong, as someone mentioned about the emperor year thign.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like the year is 19 (2007), not 17...that would explain why the mileage hasn't changed much since the last timing belt change. The car could've sat at an exporter or auction yard for a few months before it was exported.

There is no way that reads 19...

ya i can read 17 as well, i wouldn't be surprised if the cars end up sitting in some yard for a couple of months.. either way it looks like good news as i wasn't looking forward to doing a timing belt on the mr2...
