well sure he could get a Civic and spend thousands swapping the engine and putting in a turbo kit. Or he could get a car that comes with a good engine to begin with. I thought that was his intent. If he just wants a good reliable first car to get him from point A to point B then yes, a Civic is the way to go.

you can find 1st gen DSM's for decent prices...however maintenance can get quite expensive. May not be the best car if money is an issue.

However, if you can find a decent one (not abused) for a good price...

yep, DSMs are reliable if you dont bag on them. But many 1Gs are approaching 10-13 years old and have gone through many owners that really bag on them. That's where many of the problems arise from. Find one that has had only 1 owner which kept all service records and took care with it. That was the mistake i made when i purchaced mine from someone that treated it like shit.

DSMs are excellent value for your dollar. However as a relatively cheap first car to drive then mod as you go along, I'd say civic. Tons of parts and variety, engines to swap, reliable, no FI (turbos and tuning can cost big $$$$$). Won't have the potential of a DSM but hey it's a first car after all. Graduate into something better with more power once you're older, have more cash, insurance is cheaper, and you've gained all that knowledge from this first vehicle.

buy a cheap beat up neon for like $3000, buy a 2.4L with under 60k on it for $600, pay $400 for one of us neon guys to help you put it in and there you go...$4000 for a 180hp car!

Get like a 2nd gen Supra ... you can pick one up for under $4K non-turbo. Best bang for the buck I can think of. Add in a turbo and it's a good car. They're so underestimated on the roads...

for 4 grand you cant beat the 240. tons of performance potential, and decent sports car for the price, plus it's rear wheel drive! Helloooooo drifting! I'm NOT AT ALL biased either.

I would have to say either a zenki 240sx or a ae86. both have lots of potential but parts with burn your wallet up really fast.

I have an '85 Nissan 300zx comin up for sale.
It's a red non-turbo, 5-speed manual, 3.0l V-6. It just needs seats which I am lookin' for right now. 190k kms A/C and full digital dash.
Here is a pic of my car. It looks pretty much the same but it has a black pinstripe on the side and no front or rear spoiler.
I haven't decided on a price but any reasonable offer will be accepted.
