View Full Version : How many pull-ups can you do?

Just wondering to see how many proper pull-ups people can do. Full extension, nice and easy[not pumping 10 out in 10 seconds...].

Anyways I'm assuming there will be kind of crazy results and I'm sure they wont all be that correct, but just wanting to see what the average is. So I'll start, I can do 3 sets of 10 with a one minute break between each set.

usually 1 set 25, next 20, next 17 ish

I can do 18 straight pullups. I usually add around 70 lbs and do 5 reps. One of the greatest exercises!

Yeah I really like this one. My favorite. Just out of curiosity, would it be best to max out on each set? For instance when I do three sets of ten I can do more than that for the first and second set, but can only do ten the third, so should i maybe just go til failure every set?

you should do it so that the next set you barely make it to the 3rd last repetition.

somthing in mens health about that.

I usually go wider overhand grip with a 40lbs dumblel between my knees and I can get out 10 - 8 - 6 with full extension and chin over the bar. Everyone should have chins or pulls in their work out.

Are you talking the wimpy bicep close grip method or the REAL wide grip lat-working kind?

1 billion with the biceps method

3 sets 0f 10-12 wide grip.

Before I found out I had carpal tunnel in my wrists, I could do 3 sets of 10 of overhand grip...last set was a bit shakey so probably more like 8 on the last one.

Now- cannot even do them :(. They are a wicked excercise no doubt- probably one of the best.

I can do around 3 sets of 15 narrow grip and 3 sets of 10 wide grip.

What can I use to add weight to myself while doing pull-ups and dips? I've been looking for some kind of belt or vest but haven't found anything.

Agreed, some of these numbers are VERY high, but who am I to say your not telling the truth.

But a lot of people dont know the difference between a Pull-up( propenated(sp?) grip aka overhand) and a chin-up (under hand grip)

Like the average on here, I can only do 3 sets of 10 reps

Yeah sorry for not specifying, wide overhand grip. I too am surprised at the high numbers, most people I know can barely do like 5 wide grip overhand. Anyways good on you all. I need to do more! Great workout for the back I think.

7 or 8 tops.

People who claim to do 20+ are probably not doing them properly.

I can do 1 set of about 5-6, then I have to crack a red bull. 2nd set might make it to 4 if i'm lucky.

I do 4 sets of 19 with my arms at a 18 inch(approx) width apart. I use a semi closed grip while performing them and then allow my width to decrease on the 2nd set. Keep in mind this is all done with a 2.35 minute break in between each rep with a 134ml water break at the end of each set. I usually end off my chin-up routine with a refreshing hottub session along with a Vitamin C enriched Powerade to quench my overwhelming thrist.

One set of 11 - left hand overhand grip, right hand underhand grip

Then one set of 9 - left hand underhand grip, right hand overhand grip

Width of grip is a little bit more than shoulder width...

Are you talking about pull ups or chin ups? The 'underhand grip' is called a chin up and the 'overhand grip' is galled a pull up. They focus on different muscles while hitting similar supporting muscles. Chin ups are a lot easier to do than pull ups for 90% of people. So which one are we talking about?

Chins 3x10-15 30 sec between sets.
Pulls 3x6-10 30 sec between sets.

Gauranteed most of these numbers are people either doing chin ups or doing bullshit shoulder length narrow grip pull ups. I've noticed that most people, ripped or not, can't do that many wide grip pull ups. Only once I've seen a ridiculously ripped but not huge guy hang some plates while doing them.

When I first tried it, I couldn't even do 1 rep the first couple weeks. Then I was able to do 1 good rep, then 2....and now I'm at about 12-10-8. I pull all the way up (bar at bottom of neck) but I don't extend all the way at the bottom of the pull up. Not sure if I should; it can't be good to take tension off your muscles at the end of every rep.

.....

When I do 'wide grip pull ups' I use the very widest grip on a piece of equipment like this:

http://www.rosstraining.com/images/towelpullup.jpg

^^ (the grip that is angled down on the sides)

Once you start using your Lats youd be surprised how easy it becomes.

LMAO at the bullshit numbers here.

When I was working out HARD in college, I could do 3 sets of 12 with a 25-45 dumbell at my feet....now, at 30 and not having continuously worked out, it's my goal to get back to that...

Used to be able to do 3 sets 8-10 like 10+ years ago. Now heavier, out of shape with a wife and 2 kids later, I'd be happy to be able to do 2. Kids are getting bigger now so I'd love to try to get back into it. Anyone have a pull up/chin up machine for sale? :D

Around 10 fresh I would say...I only do my pull ups at the end of my back day when I have already exhausted myself
with that in mind...I am also 245 lbs

Wide grip. 10 reps with 25lbs plate, and then 2 sets of 8 reps with 35lb plate.
I agree, this is one of the very basic yet important lat execerise if you wanna gain some mass.
