It's probably for the best but I kind of wanted HD to win as it offered the same performance as Blu-ray but cheaper but I have a PS3 so it's all good. Early adopters FTL!

I wanted HD to win, because I fucking HATE sony, and i REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY do not want them controlling the next major storage media.

Blu-ray Disc Association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_Association)

The "Blu-ray Disc Founder" was founded in May 2002 by nine leading electronic companies: Sony, Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung. Spearheaded by NP Infotech, on February 19th 2002 the companies announced [2] that they were the "Founders" of the Blu-ray Disc and later changed their name to the "Blu-ray Disc Association" on May 18, 2004 to allow more companies to join their development. Some examples of companies that signed in include Apple, TDK, Dell, Hewlett Packard, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. and Universal Music Group. As of December 2007, there are more than 250 members and supporters of the Association.

Without a doubt Microsoft will put a Blu-ray player in the marketplace. The reason why Xbox took most of the marketplace sales is because Sony was having problems getting the PS3 to the sales floor and the costs of the Blu-ray player in the PS3 affected the final cost of the PS3. This enabled Microsoft to get their console to market more quickly and for a lower price. Now that Microsoft can just "dump" the add-on HD attachment and replace it with a Blu-ray, they in my opinion were the smarter duck in the race to getting the console to the public.
I think Microsoft made the wise decision by not including a built in player for either format of HD, now they can adjust their system to reflect the outcome of the Blu-ray/HD war.

Why? The movies look the same on both formats.

I just stocked up on about 100 HD-DVD's... gonna make another huge buy when prices fall even more.

02-19-2008, 12:32 PM
They look the same I know. Its just that I bought into the losing format. I'm going to wait until BluRays come out for all the HD movies now so I can just have everything be the same.

True I will probably buy up a few HD-DVD's when the stores want to clear them out and then wait for a dual format player to drop in price because they won't be making many more of those either...

i still have only seen 2 BD movies, 1 that came with the PS3 and 1 rental..the nearest Blockbuster probably has more VHS tapes than BD ...broadband downloads are going to win this war

Not really, actually. LG plans on continuing to make dual format players (they just announced two new ones) in order to make the transition easier. It'll be dumb for other companies to let LG have that entire market, so we'll still be seeing more dual format players coming out.

I ended up selling this one for $250. I still have 2 more of them in mint condition, one is a single LD condensed version of the concert, the other is a 2 disc LD full concert that was finally released on DVD about 3 years ago.

I also have about 30 different LD's of stuff that was never released on DVD, including a limited edition Beyond (the band) Acoustic set from Malaysia filmed a few weeks before the lead singer died.

I still have a LD player at my house haha.

Why?? I spent 100 bucks on a HD-DVD add-on for my 360 and got a game with it and a remote.. Over the past year or so I've got about 20 HD-DVD movies that i've been able to enjoy and now I can stock up on many more as they will be clearing them out over the next few months.. When all is said and done by the time I need a Blu-Ray player I'll have quite a nice selection of HD-DVD movies that no matter what I'll always be able to play??

So I don't see why it was a bad idea to get one.. No matter what people will tell you.. Blu-Ray is no better than HD-DVD as far as quality goes..

For all who may find the need to convert their HD to Blu-ray

Taken from Slashdot:

"Are you one of the few who boarded the HD-DVD Titanic ship headed to the bottom of ocean to join BetaMax? Fret no longer, friend, simply convert those and pretend like you never invested in the wrong technology! All you need is a Windows machine with a fast processor, an HD-DVD drive, a Blu-Ray burner, 30GB of free disk space, at least, though 40GB or more is recommended and an internet connection to download the software! Or you can sit and be the crazy guy who continues to argue that HD-DVD is the superior technology whether it's true or not."

Or u can buy a dirt cheap player and keep playing those discs. Toshiba A3 1080i for $99 and the A30 for $149 at London drugs!

modded46
02-21-2008, 10:32 AM
The A30 is a much better unit.. but they will continue to drop in price..

I hope that process of converting HD-DVD to BluRay was a joke, because you'd have to be a total idiot to do that..

It was pretty much over a while ago. Blu Ray players got installed in the market much quicker due to PS3 and a much stronger push in marketing. Blockbuster handed out pamphlets that really sided with BR as early as when the format war just started -- them going exclusively BR wasn't a huge shock to me.

Plus, "Blu Ray" is catchier than "HD DVD" :poosie:

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/04/28/blu-ray-fight-life

DESPITE emerging triumphant in the battle of the high-definition storage format, Sony may still have a way to go to win the war, say boffins from analyst outfit ABI Research.

ABI reckons that because almost 85 per cent of all Blu-ray players are actually PS3s, Blu-ray as a separate video unit, or PC disk drive could take as long as five years to take off.

In a recent report covered by the (cough) Philippine Inquirer, a principal analyst at ABI, Steve Wilson, noted that the fact that so many DVD players (35 per cent) could be "upconverted" to work with high-definition TVs, was a major problem for Blu-ray, especially with the prediction that over the next five years as many as 60 per cent of all DVDs would be upconversionable.

Blu-ray manufacturers, who at least appear to have caught on to the problem, have now started to slash prices in what appears to be a desperate bid to get the market going, even to the extent that computer manufacturers are offering to configure Blu-rays for reduced prices.

But as Wilson points out in his report, “If you're only going to spend $500-600 on a PC, are you really going to spend 40 per cent more for a built-in Blu-ray player?"
