Yeah the design is hideous. It's just not growing on me at all. For a car that's almost $50K out the door, it needs to look good on at least some angles.

No matter how awesome the specs are, it just isn't enough to overcome those nasty ass looking altezza lights.

All the previous STI's have always been mediocre looking; not really ugly, but not really breath taking either. However, this generation was really beaten with the ugly stick :barf:

Also where do you see a $50K+ Subaru in any of these pics? This car is 44-45K OTD in Canada and this particular one looks imported which is was probably brough here for a bit less than that.

Starts at 45k, add a couple options and your at 48k, finance and your up to 55k.

I'm sure it is cheaper in the states, but going by Canadian MSRP, this car is 50k, and probably the ugliest car for the money.

Edit- In the U.S it is about 36k with that BBS wheel package, I would say that is good performance for the money, buying this thing in Canada would be retarded though.

That's incorrect this car is fully loaded at 45K unless you count fog lights, tint and such as options. This car can be had for 45K out the door loaded here.

Comparable car in US is 39K + duty, gst and import fees - discounts would probably only run slightly cheaper to buy in US. Buying down there would be retarded unless you want a base model that we don't get.

I used subaru.com and subaru.ca for my prices, I added the 17" bbs rims and some $200 option and those are the prices I got. :dunno:

$44 995 is official base MSRP on subaru.ca though I wouldn't be surprised if they have to sell them for less because of how they look...

Total MSRP $52,450 i don't think you know the difference between OPTIONS and ACCESSORIES. options are things you get with the car, like navigation, sunroof, bbs wheels, etc. accessories are the things you buy at the parts counter like mud guards, trailer hitches, bike racks, etc.

the car comes with BBS wheels, there's no need to put accessory wheels on it. lol

and a member on here bought his sti for $44k OTD. OTD stands for OUT THE DOOR. which means that's what he paid for the car. not $55k, but $44k.

if you don't think people will spend $44k on an sti you are mistaken. the old sti sold for $50k and had a lot less features. i don't think subaru had any trouble selling those.

I was looking into getting one of these but I decided to settle down and buy a mazdaspeed3 instead. The new STi's looks soo damn boring, but then again I never did like suburu's. Hands down, performance-wise the sti has an edge agains my car, but I would rather have a good looking car instead and still have enough power to satisfy what I'm used to.

what you guys dont remember is that essentially this car is designed to be like a rally car... the last time subaru had a car win was in 2001, and the last time that their manufacturer won with the most points was in 1997. for the past 2 years the winning manufacturer was in fact Ford, with the focus. in fact, the last time mitsubishi won was in 1998.

the winning cars from 2000-now have all been hatchbacks, similar in design to the STI.

the whole concept of the STI and Evo was that it would be a street legal version of the rally car.

the neon had a great lsd, the caliber has an lsd that uses the front brakes to slow down the tires, which apparently does NOT work well.

i'd still have to drive a new sti, but as far as looks, they really aren't bad, and definitely better then the evo or mazda 3 imo

   Come on, it's not that ugly. To me the only real flaws are that the taillights are 5 years outdated and the front end is too long for a hatch and gives the whole thing the high top sneaker look. If it had less front overhang like the new civic it would look more proportioned. It looks not too bad from the front IMO and the interior looks acceptable.

People have to remember that the STI and EVO aren't luxury cars and were never meant to be. It's pretty unreasonable to expect a car to come stock with tricked out AWD, 300hp, Brembo brakes, BBS wheels to come in under $40K CDN. Performance doesn't come cheap. And alot of the haters are the same people that think an Infinity is a real luxury car lol.

I have owned a 04 for years and now own the 08 . To be honest I agree they are horrible at first but after-market parts make this car trump any previous STI. I have on order the Red Tail lights (Film) and the JDM grill. I have on order as well the COBB access-port and down pipe and from what i read you can actually set 3 different maps (some have said there is no need for boost controller). And interchange them on the go. Cobb has shown almost a 40whp gain just by changing the maps.

So my conclusion after owning both cars.

08 Cons
Seats (Unless your Fat)
Guage lights I think me and my wife counted 5 different colors.
Pedal placement

Pros:
More after-market potential
More room but at the same time feels smaller when driving.
Off the line allot faster less lag by far.
More Torque
the option of I drive when in traffic.
Car doesn't roll back when on a hill.

All in all I love my 08 and would never trade it for an older STI. Also STi team is kicking ass this year winning in December Rally.

Don't you guys know that it's "What's on the inside that counts" ?

Sure the new STI won't win a beauty pagent but it will win lots of performance competitions, especially when the roads are slick!

Performance, reliability, practicality and style. At under $50k somthing has got to give and for my money I will forego the style bit because I don't give a sh*t what people think about the "look" of my car when I blow by them :D

Ok for those who said they would rather spend this 50K on a entry level Mercedes, BMW or Lexus, you obviously aren't buying what your heart wants rather spending mommy and daddy's money on just a car that 50K can buy you. People who buy STI's believe it or not are pretty die hard enthusiasts, they actually buy these cars because of how they handle and all the parts that make it a street legal rally car, and whatever that Subaru put into the car to live up to that reputation. They don't go just out and spend 50K just because of the name of a car, some exceptions though, but i can't see Subaru having a hard time pushing these off their lots just because you kiddies think it isn't worth 45-50K.

I'm sure this car has lots of potential and when done up right it would look badass. Its not like a Neon SRT-4, they are ugly to begin with, they get even uglier when done up. "No matter how fast your Neon is it's still not fast enough to run away from ugly."

Why couldn't they integrate looks into that equation? Every other company seems to have the concept down. I must admit though, with a drop and red tail lights the car looks significantly better.

Cost. What other car offers such a well rounded performance package and world class styling for under $50k new?

I am not here to convince anyone to buy an '08 STI. Hell, if the world hates them the price on the used car market will be lower when I want one !

If the suspension improves on the bobblehead of the previous Gen STI, then I could drive that car. I would drive the EVO X too, just based on the handling and Bilstein dampers alone. I don't buy a car like that for the luxury features. Your $45 - 50K buys you an AWD powertrain and well rounded performance. Not many cars in that price range allow you to go from DD, to roadcourse, autocross, to gravel, then through a snowstorm. Its like a Swiss army knife of cars, like the EVO would be. The advantage of the 08 STI in my opinion is the fact that it is a hatch. Sure the styling is controversial, but a hatch is a lot more practical, especially since the EVO loses trunk space to the battery and windshield fluid reservoir.

If you need your car to coddle you with heated leather and woodgrain, then you are in the wrong market. I couldn't give a shit about that stuff. I would take either of the 08 STI or EVO X for the money over an IS250/350 any day, but my needs are not the same as others. Some people need their cars to look a certain way. I just want my cars to perform a certain way.

The Chargespeed kit is so nice! It's quite simple really, suspension, kit, wheels and you can make any car look nice haha It just adds up having to mod every car you buy because it's so addicting and costs so much $$$ :nut:

I keep telling myself I don't like the new STi and then I look at this chopped picture and I change my mind.

Yeah, at first look stock 08 STI's don't look so hot, seems like they ride a little too high even for stock. But once you see chopped pics you realize the potenial of the pimpness hidden in the 08 STI.

I like everything about the car and the aftermarket potential for this car in both looks and styling are going to be tremendous.

The only thing this thread has proved is that wagons/hatchbacks fail in NA

N/A culture is always slow to take up good things. It will change slowly ;)

the neon had a great lsd, the caliber has an lsd that uses the front brakes to slow down the tires, which apparently does NOT work well.

i'd still have to drive a new sti, but as far as looks, they really aren't bad, and definitely better then the evo or mazda 3 imo

wow that looks a hellav alot better. ITs amazing what you can do by simply replacing the tail lights.

at 44k out the door I think on paper its definately a steal, and it wont take much to make the car looks sweeter. its great that no one likes it as i'm always sold on rarity vs popularity. and if you look at the EVO fully loaded now that is way over priced imo

You live in the Mackenzie Town, Copperfield area?
