View Full Version : Might be gettin rid of the cobalt ...

Well as the title says I might be getting rid of the cobalt for something a little bit more affordable. Looking at getting my own place (im sick of living with people, i need my space for awhile!) so i have to cut back on unnecessary costs and paying $370 a month for a car that i get some joy out of isn't a "need" , it landed under "want" ... so now im thinking of buying a car for $10,000-$15,000. Looking for late 90's to early 00's.

Any suggestions? As always, i like potential in cars so if i get bored of it i can always buy it a new toy :p

I was thinking a civic... but the early 00's came with 0 power, i want something with a little bit of balls to it.

so since you got through that wall of text, this is really nothing more than a "Give me ideas!!!" thread *sigh* sorry guys, i know you are thinking "not another one!" lol

$370 a month is nothing in car payment terms. A 15K car with a LOC will run you 300 a month with 0 down over 60 months. I'd say either keep the cobalt or sell it and get a 1-2K beater while you buy a place.

You'll lose a few grand at least on selling the cobalt too.

As far as cars with power 00-03 maximas have decent power and they are fairly cheap, so are altimas.

^^ Thats true, but at the end of the day i'd at least get to keep the car, the Cobalt im just leasing :(

What was the total price of the cobalt?? How long is your lease?

For your price range, maybe you should consider a Prelude.

I vote for 5th Gen Prelude as well. Coming from a previous owner, it was a great car that treated me very well and IMO looks great while having luxuries like heated seats and sunroof as standards.

00-01 had 3.0L 222HP, 02+ had a 3.5L 255HP. Looks pretty good until you actually drive it. I used to drive one to work every day and it's almost a chore to drive. Handling is brutal.

My vote is for a clean SIR. Especially since you're budget conscious. Civics cost next to nothing to maintain and fix.

Even an Acura TL would be a good choice. They're right in your budget and they're a lot of car for the money. It will cost more to fix when it breaks down though.

^ word. See if you can lease to own with your Cobalt. At least that way your not throwing your money away on lease payments.:dunno:

I'd vote for a 2001-2003 Maxima (2003 if you can, as they have the 3.5L V6). Either way I think its the most car for your money. Doesn't exactly handle on rails, but has good power and will be reliable and practical.

hahahah kidding. since you are going to get rid of a want to satisfy a need/want I would not be looking at anything german cuz parts will be expensive and your trying to save costs...so I don't know maybe a used infinity g35 4 door....

2004's come in under 20 grand. Been in one and they aren't the coupe...but they still haul ass, decent luxury, and well it's an import...probably still expensive on parts but probably not as much as a bmw.

Nah, not looking at leasing again.

Honestly I had my eye on 2003 1.8T jetta or a 5th gen lude, glad to hear a few of you give the feedback on the prelude.

Its fun, lots of potential, and 200 hp so it wouldnt be that much difference between my car now, just a higher rev but less torque (but i imagine better gas milegae too)

Edit: another car i was looking at was the type-s but theres a lot of these around and somewhat tough to find at 15,000.

If i got a prelude i think the only styling i would do on the car is get the greddy lip, mugen side skirts, thats about it

If you want to save money, don't buy a car you can mod. Who cares about the fun factor. The fact is, you want to minimize expenses.

You want mugen side skirts, greddy front lip, then you want to lower the car, get some wheels, might as well get an exhaust and cai too. WTF.

Go buy a 99/00 Civic sedan. Cheap, simple, easy.

15k for a 01 lude is ALOT.
I vote 1999/2000 SIR too, easy, fun, cheap, reliable, good on gas.

If you want to step it up a bit, go for a CL-S in 5speed.

I still don't get how you'll save money if you're looking at cars that are around 15 grand?

Your residual on the Cobalt is probably that much is it not? If you were to sell it, you would probably get around that value for it.

When buying your first house it's best not to have any car loans. Its kind of weird when I was buying my first home 3 yrs ago I was told to get rid of my car loan (10k) and they would increase my mtg by 40K. But as soon as I had the house they were willing to give me a car loan in almost any ammount LOL.

A comment as far as leasing a Civic Si goes: It's a great deal IMO. You can sign up for a 5yr lease at 0 down and pay like 300ish a month at 1.5% interest. Investing your money elsewhere you could make a way better ROR. You can give it back after 5 yrs, buy it out, buy it out early. Lots of options...

Are you kidding? That car is way too overpriced. I'm not hating on Preludes as they are good cars but they have to be one of the most overpriced cars of the 90's.

Like Aleks said it looks to me like you are going to make a lateral move which doesn't make sense if you are trying to save money. Is this really about saving money or are you just bored of the Cobalt?

A bit of Column A and column B really. My dad is offering me some $$ for the cobalt to cover some of the money i've paid off already on the lease and just take over the lease himself.

Guah life sucks sometimes to figure out whats most economical :thumbsdow

All advice / tips are welcome (thanks for the advice thus far guys)

if you want to save money, get a car for under 5 grand that you won't mod, but will be reliable, like an auto civic, or corolla

Dude, i dont want to suck ALL the fun outta my life lol. It's bad enough knowing im going to be in debt with the rediculars housing costs , its another thing to step outside of my house and feel depressed looking at a boring car lol. I need something that will at the very least put a smile on my face

once you buy a house, getting a decent car is easy, as aleks said.

until then, rock a 5 speed civic, but once you start modding, you are FUCKED, because its NEVER just exhaust and lowered. you will want side skirts, then that cf hood is a STEAL at $350, and those wheels are a great deal, only a grand with rubber, etc. ;)

get the fun car once you get a place, until then, rock something low cost and reliable, if it has some fun to it, bonus.

Guess when i meet with the guy from the bank regarding a mortage i'll see what's the best rate he can give me. It's shitty cause i spent most of my savings on paying off my student loans and visa (yeah, i was pretty stupid as a kid on spending my money...) - doing that promo through Pointe of view where they pay $20,000 downpayment for you from an rrsp and you pay that back over 15 years.

Any mortage brokers on Beyond I might be able to chat to as well?

theres nothing wrong with buyer an older car these days even if its over 10 years old espically japanese, cfcn did a report on how like people hold on to their honda/toyota , longer then ever before.

It is funny because I know a guy that owns a repair shop (which will remain unnamed...) and he said that Honda/Toyota/Nissan owners are what make him rich. He said when say a 15 year old domestic car comes in that needs a grand worth of work many owners will cut their losses, take the car to the dump and upgrade. A 15 year old Honda/Toyota/Nissan comes in and needs the same work which will cost 1500 because the parts are more and the owner will happily pay for it and the entire time talk about how great Japanese cars are and how they will drive forever. lol

He said tons of these cars should have been off the road a long time ago but the owners feel the need to extend their life with costly repairs.

Now before people attack, neither him nor I are saying that a 15 year old domestic is as reliable as an import, because back then they really weren't close. But some of those old imports will still cost a lot to maintain and keep running.

I have your solution:

Buy a $300 - $5000 four door Civic for your daily commute. Then, take another $5000 - $6000 and buy a used 600 cc sportbike. Way more fun than anything with four wheels and still gets 40 mpg!

From a financial standpoint youre better off staying in your lease than using 8-11 thousand in capital to buy a car. With a lease at least youre freeing up cash flow, you have full warranty which means no surprise expenses. The only thing that would really make sense is to buy like a $2000 beater that you dont care about that way you're making all of your cashflow available.

I decided to stick with the cobalt, like you guys said - just seems sorta foolish to get outta it.

Its a fun enough car and does the job.
