http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7240653.stm

lets have a fun debate here, for those who don't want to read the article, there is a device in the uk that emits a high pitched frequency, usually only heard by those UNDER 25. It seems store clerks use it to disperse large groups of teenagers who are pissing off customers.

another use from wiki...

Some adolescents, however, have found the once annoying sound can be used as a tool, and turned it into a ringtone to prevent disciplinary actions that would normally be imposed if a mobile phone user was caught using their phones during school hours, by creating a mobile phone ringtone that is inaudible to most adults.

would you want to see these in canada? explain your position...

more info on the device...

When I was living in Winnipeg the 7-11 in our neighbourhood would blast classical music and opera to keep the kids from hanging around in the parking lot.

The 7-11 on 17th ave does that at lunch to keep the Western kids out of their parking lot. It didn't work much though, at least it didn't 6 years ago

I dont thik it is a good idea at all, would still be fun to see though. Why not call the cops if these teen punks are trying to stab you all the time? Or get a bat and warn em off?

I'm sure the guy accross the street from me would like one. Dozens of kids walk through his yard everyday, instead of walking the extra 300' to go around the corner.

It's a somewhat annoying sound. What's the big deal?
Every time I go to the mall I have to listen to whatever shitty fucking music every goddamned store has on. If given the choice between a high pitch whine, and hip hop or pop, well...

As for the cell phone thing: the only way they'd get away with it was if no one complained. If no one is complaining, and no one is actually using the cell phones, then there's not really a problem is there?
Sure, it could be argued that the phones ringing are a distraction and cause kids to not pay attention, but that's a stupid argument. When I was a kid cell phones didn't exist (well, they did, but they came with a shoulder strap and a 6v motorcycle battery, so incognito maneuvers were nigh impossible), and I didn't fucking pay attention. I stared out the window, I doodled, I daydreamt, I wrote stories, etc. I did about anything I could think of to kill time other than listen to what the guy at the front of the room was saying...

I do find it personally satisfying to find out that teenagers and mice/rats can both be eradicated by the same means...

The concept of simplicity is lost on people these days. Just use a firehose

I hate people who stereotype teenagers as all being stupid punks. I know a lot of stupid middle-aged people too.

At the end of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band there is a similar tone. John included it to drive dogs nuts...

I can hear 19 Hz but not the higher ones.

The one for 60 year olds is by far the most peircing.

I can only hear up to the 17.4khz one, which is true about my age. The higher ones I can "feel," if that's even possible, but to audibly be able to discern it, I can't.

Everything except 20 and above. Not bad, I thought for sure I'd be deaf by now. I used to do the hearing tests when I worked construction and would have to fake it in order to get let out of the testing booth.
