Ok.. I hate going into places like best buy, future shop, soundsaround etc. I want some input on what's a good deck so that I can buy something online and not have to deal with going into those hell holes.

I really like the look and reviews of the Kenwood Excelon, but Im not sure if they come with Ipod connections.
The requirements
- front and rear preouts
- ipod connection cable (included)
- clean looking, no bullshit rainbow color displays, none or very minimal silver accents
- high quality

thanks guys

iPod exclusive connections are becoming rare. You can add them on to most decks, but there was enough demand from consumers that a bunch have switched to USB inputs.

Pioneer's new line will have both 1/8" standard plug inputs in the rear and a USB input on the front for media player connections. iPod exclusive connection is available through an add on box, both by Pioneer or by PAC (both work just fine).

I prefer Pioneer's midrange decks over most players for the warranty service and features. Kenwood tends to have some quality control issues.

I myself prefer Alpine, they've never let me down... I'm in the same boat as you, want a clean looking deck, not crazy on the colors, works well with my iPod, very little silver...

A few I've had my eye on:

I just got the Pioneer DEH500, it's not a high-end deck but is good enough for me If you get the premier line, it comes with all the cables. I got the Premier edition (500) for the same price as the standard edition at FS (5000)

It controls my Ipod very well, I think they've improved the functionality a lot with the new models. It's just a standard USB connection so it can be used with any USB player. I've been using it mostly with a thumb drive so far.

I want to try my portable hard drive but I doubt it will work since it doesn't have an external power supply.

So clean, Alpine makes beautiful decks without all the wonderful rainbow shit. I've gone with Alpine for years when I want to run high end and they've never failed me.

I've always had good time with alpine as well, but I went with a pioneer premier this time with bluetooth and ipod connection. Nice looking deck for a good price.

Will the Pioneer decks work with older generation iPods? I have a second generation iPod Nano.

I ask because the Alpine specifically states it works with 4th generation and newer iPods (at least using it's "full speed" functionality).

I've got the second gen ones to work before, but on the slightly older Pioneer decks. If you can track one down (used or new, it's last years models) with an "IB" at the end of the model number, it should work. I think the new Pioneer decks with the rear USB input will also work, but I can't confirm that.

BTW, Nano's are only in 3rd gen. 4th gen is for the big iPods.

I just baught the Alpine 9886 and i love it. Included ipod cable with full speed control and USB dongle on the back. You can add a USB extension cable to mount anywhere.

Great features and the price was INSANE at $250 from visions.

Apple's website's telling me that my color Nano is a second generation.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688

After looking at Apple's website, I think they are referring to the second generation of the Nano, not of the entire iPod line. Which, makes sense now since you say that Nanos are 3rd generation iPod.

If you connect your iPod via usb, does it charge the iPod too?

I'm running a Pioneer AVIC D3 Nav/CD/DVD unit and all I needed was to purchase the pioneer ipod cable to get full functionality. It's a decent deck. I've had good luck with Alpine in the past as well.

It's getting harder and harder to get illumination choice. Some of the alpines still do, but Eclipse and Clarion (higher end of both lines) still have some of the best.
