So i was going to go buy a new car this weekend, got some money together for a down payment, etc.

After doing some research and what not, i decided on a subaru Impreza 2.5rs 4door, just base model, not WRX (to much money).

Called up my insurance company today to discover that i would be paying 374/ month for full coverage, compared to 118/month on my honda for PLPD, now i realize that i would be jumping to full coverage and a brand new financed vehicle, but that kind of jump per month is fucking crazy.

For a little driving history, I have been licensed since 16 (now 21), Insured since 16, I have only had 1 conviction (speeding under 15kph).

So being that insurance is almost as much as the fucking car payment, 22 dollars less to be exact.

So i said fuck that, it would just be ridiculars to have that kind of monthly payment and try to invest, move out eventually and get married (all within the next 4 years).

Fucking gouger insurance companies.

Guess Ill just put a few hundred into the honda to make it last another year.

Try a few other brokers. My wife says the broker may have seen your 1 ticket, and immediately put you thru kingsway, or another high risk. See if you can find another broker, doesnt hurt to check.

hell, i had the same problem, but if you want the car, you gotta have the insurance. so i just kept PLPD on my vehicles until about 2 years ago. First thing i did before buying a vehicle, was call the insurance company to get the rates for the car, before even going to look at the car to make sure i could afford the coverage before getting my hopes up.

I called RBC insurance to get the exact quote on the phone today, but all weekend i was on the differant websites doing the online quote thingys and they all came back 300+, i thought maybe i was entering some info in wrong or something for the grid position, but apparently i wasnt, as they are all that high.

I was hoping for something around 200/month, i didnt realize full coverage was THAT much more.

Call around, try Dyck Insurance.

Are the rates really that differant vehicle vs. vehicle? or is it mainly based on the insurable driver?

When i asked for a quote on the impreza, i also asked for a quote on a 2009 corrolla S and is was only like 10$ differance.

Its both, replacement cost is one factor. Another is that youre 21, also, youre in calgary, not an outskirt. My wife pays half of what she did now that were in crossfield, same with airdrie. It went in half as soon as we moved. Lots of different factors. Maybe get not AS new of a car.

My pop's suggested that to, but fuck, if im going to be financing and making payments, i dont want a used car, i want a new one.

I would rather just wait for a bit, maybe save more money, finish school (2 months left) and get a job that would allow me to afford the 800/month total payment.

I think the smarter way to go about it is to but a 1-3 year old car with a loc, as long as you are discilplined with your finances you can pay the car off wayyyyyy faster and you won't get bent with insurance.

Also you said that called RBC, i'ver heard they are the cheapest around, I called to get a qoute from them and the price they gave me on an insurance package was well worth switching, but they wouldn't insure my bike because I haven't had 4 years continuous coverage on a motorcycle:banghead: fuckers!

I'm not sure if you've heard of this website, but try filling out a quote on there. They compare rates across different companies and give you an estimate of what you should be paying. The quotes are usually reasonable...

good luck!

Have you tried to quote a plain Yaris / Corolla / Fit?

Impreza has always been expensive IMO.

In Alberta, you gotta pay to play. Unless there's something awfully wrong with your Honda, get another 3-4 years out of it and upgrade.

I'm an insurance broker and from the quotes i've done..i've always found impreza/wrx/sti to be pretty high on insurance. I suggest you pick another new vehicle to buy if you don't want to spend that much on insurance.

Have you tried Meloche Monnex?

I have my WRX insured through them and I'm paying $125/month for full coverage. I'm 26 with 1 ticket in the last year. Hopefully I'll be singing their praises come next January when I renew. Claimed a hit and run on my car mid January.

Damn hit and runners :guns: :guns: :guns: :guns:

Wow... you young guys get raped.

I pay $58 for my 2001 Grand Prix, and about the same for my Sequoia. Both don't have collision, mind you.... (which is why I rarely drive the Sequoia)

when i had my 05 impreza rs (24 at the time) with TD meloche monnex i was paying just under 1600 a year for full coverage minus glass. You should really try them if you can.

you think thats alot? I'm 20, no tickets, with driver training. PLPD on my tracker is about 137 a month. Full coverage on the Golf... $600 a month. I'm not joking... 7200 a year. Thankfully, since my dad half owns it, I leave it under his name.

ashers, you're getting screwed
when I was 21 and single, full coverage on my golf was $160/month, clear driving history. Now I'm 23 and married, this caused it to come down to $130/month and when I get back home I'm switching to RBC because they quoted me under $100/month. Currently I'm with state farm and have driver training, multi-car and good student discounts.

Shop around, insurance companies all seem to pick a different category of drivers to hate on, there are a few out there that are more friendly to young drivers than others (i.e. NOT dominion of canada for example)

The most expensive car I've ever owned ($40,000+), and the most powerful (340hp) is also the cheapest to insure at a measly $70 something a month :D

Meloche FTW.

call Lane Insurance, my friend who's 18 got reinsured with them after his insurance drop him cuz he was too much of a high risk. he has like massive tickets, his license got suspened for a month and for full coverage on his 2002 mercedez benz S430 was only 430/month with a $1000 deductable. so with ur clean driving record im sure they can give u a better deal then 374/month

I own a 2004 VW Golf (soon to be sold thank god). I am paying $250/month on the financing through a bank. When I went to get insurance on it, AMA wanted $350/month and I have been with them since I was 16 (am now almost 20). One thing I did was jack the deductible. I said to them "how high can I go with the deductible" and they said as high as you want. Normally a bank will not let you go above a certain amount (since the car is their investment, usually no more then $1K) but I have my loan through Community Savings (credit union, they rock). So, I have a $2k deductible. Yes, it would be gay if I was ever in an accident, but if I had not been going back to school in the fall and keeping the car, I would have saved $2K in under 2 years (more then making up for the deductible which I probably WOULDN'T have to worry about having never been in an accident and being a very decent driver).

I just did an online quote and how is it possible that Meloche Monex would be 254/ month

where as TD,RBC,Etc are all 350+?

Being under 25 and having a newer car is tuff i have an 4 year old tacoma and my payments are through the roof. But its the price i have to pay since i need a truck for work. Let me know if you find a cheaper company out there im with TD and would like to switch.

Problem with BRAND NEW cars right from the dealership is they will want you to have full coverage on the vehicle so you cant cut corners like keeping collision off (though on a new car, i wouldn't want anything less than full coverage).

It's a pain in the ass, to be honest when i was 22 and looking at a ford focus, insurance companies wanted 300+ a month for a 130ish hp car.

It is a pain in the ass, but you gotta rough it out.

I didn't notice the big drop in insurance at 25. I don't think it's as big as most people make it out to be.

a year later, same car with Meloche Monnex my rate is going to be 169 as of March 31, full coverage (this will be my second year with MM)

That is very possible, the best thing to do is to call up either that company, or if they don't deal directly with their customers, a broker that deals with them. Usually when they have those online quotes they are pretty accurate.

I'm 19 and I pay 160 a month on my 2000 GSR with PLPD only, TD wanted 4400 a year for full coverage
If I get off GDL does my insurance cost decrease?

Im 25 and pay $43/month COMBINED for both my cars. Another $700/yr on the crotch rocket.

2 at fault accidents more than 6 years ago, and maybe 1-2 speeding tickets still on my record.

You guys are getting screwed. TD Insurance + Provincial union discount = more money in my pocket.

Totally remind me of when I finished school. I was about the same age and wanted to reward myself with a brand new car since I managed to make it through with no student loans and I had about 5k to put down. It was 97 and I decided a Camero Z28 was going to be the perfect car (no I didn't have a mullet). Until I called the insurance companies. Most wouldn't insure it and the ones that would wanted over $600 a month. Needless to say I didn't end up buying one.

On the bright side by the time you are in your early 30's you can can 2 drivers fully insured on two relatively expensive cars for less than $200 a month.
