Yeah, that's why I was curious and started the thread...

From what I've heard/noticed, people from Calgary say "Kal - Ga - Ree" more often, and FOBs/out of towners say "Kal - gree" or "Kal - Guh - Ree" more often haha...

:dunno:

LOL you can always tell a tourist or a non-naitive calgarian when they say Cal-gar-y. It's just like going to toronto and pronouncing it "tor-on-toe". Not all of them do it, but you'll pretty much never find a native calgarian that says "cal-ga-ry". I'm a proud born and raised calgarian and I say "Cal-gree"

Do you guys really say Calgary with only 2 syllables?

All where are you putting the emphasis?

I personally say CAL-guh-ree but the last 2 syllables are very subtle almost to give the impression that they might be one but they arent.

CAL-gree just sounds awkward and forced and should really be spelled Calgry if that is the case. Since you cant pronounce the "a" without adding a third syllable.

Just think of the guy who says "Here are your Calgary FLAMES!"

He certainly doesn't use 2 syllables when saying Calgary.

After doing some extensive research I have found that when pronouncing "CALGARY" it doesn't really matter, as long as somewhere in there you here the faint southern Alberta accent sayin "Oilers & Eskies Blow", thats all that matters cause then you know you have found a true Calgarian!

BTW Oilers SUCK! :goflames: :goflames: :goflames: yaaaaaaaay Cal-ga-reeeeeeee!

Calgary Bay (the gaelic spelling escapes me) on the Isle of Mull in Scotland. There used to be (not sure if it's still there) a GIGANTIC mural of Calgary Bay at city hall with the explination of it all.

I refuse to believe that you guys all say "Calgary" with only 2 syllables.

I have been here for 6 years and have never heard someone say "Cal-gree".

Here is the pronunciation as it is in the dictionary (3 syllables)

http://www.bartleby.com/61/32/C0033200.html
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/calgary

Here is the history of the name.

http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/education/ab_e.php

Calgary

This city was so named in 1876 by Lieutenant-Colonel James Farquharson Macleod of the North West Mounted Police. It is the name of the ancestral estate of his cousins, the MacKenzies, on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, which he had visited shortly before. In the fall of 1875, there was trouble with the Métis and Indians in the Prince Albert region, and Major-General E. Selby, commanding the Canadian Militia, was sent from the east to investigate. He (Colonel Macleod) was advised by telegraph to meet General Selby at Red Deer with fifty men. At this conference, one of the matters agreed upon was that a police post should be established on the Bow River. On his return south, Colonel Macleod sent E Troop under Inspector E.A. Brisebois to erect a barracks on the west side of the river. It was said that Inspector Brisebois wished to name the establishment after himself but Colonel Macleod who was then Assistant Commissioner of the Force decided it should be called Calgary.

It is interesting to note that the Blackfoot name for Calgary was moll-inistsis-in-aka-apewis, translating to "elbow many houses" and the Cree name is O-toos-kwa-nik, translating to "elbow house". Both obviously refer to the Elbow River. The name Calgary is variously spelled as it appears on the Mackenzie estate on the Isle of Mull. In one account it is spelled Calgarry but on a recent map of the Isle of Mull the spelling as used in the Alberta city is evident. The translation of the Gaelic word is "Clear Running Water."

Kal-Gary.

I say Kal-gree.

Born here, lived in BC for 20 years, been back 6. Kal-Gree

Perhaps it is fast slang.

Besides, who cares? We all know where each other is talking about. Even when fobtastic asians say Kah-guh-lee I know where they speak of.
