Just got to go the Registry and check. Just ask for the plate you want and they will tell you if its taken or not.

When you go the registry to check, arn't you allowed 3 choices? If all 3 of your choices are taken (or denied), do you have to pay another ?180? to try again, or will they let you keep picking until you get something that is open?

You can verbally ask them to check if that plate is available. They say yes or no. There is no limit how many times you can ask them.

Ding Ding Ding, from what they told me you need $180 to start the process (search and get the plate made), and you get 3 chances.

I think you called a registry that had a moron answering the phones. Call your closest registry and ask them to do the search. There is NO cost to search. The only cost is when you are ready to buy the plate if it is available.

If the plate is good to go, you order the plate and it comes to you in the mail about 4-6 weeks later.

See what the plates look like before you get them.

absolutely not right.

You can ask them as many times as you want as to the availability of your specific plate. Does not cost a single penny and definitely does not cost you $180 for three tries.

How do I know? experience.

I can't seem them being able to take $180.00 from the just for the opportunity to have three choices at maybe scoring a plate. Maybe the registry was just screwing you? Now that they are all privatized I've heard that sometimes the staff is less than knowledgeable and that you can sometimes get three different answers at three different places...

I walked into the registry asked, and no charge they told me the plate I wanted was available, they will check if the plate is vailable for free.

then to reserve the plate so no one else can get it or get that plate then it cost you money

Its also not just if your plate is taken, but if there are no very similar plates already taken.... guess thats to stop confusion. But then you could get O1I00I1 or some combination of 0's O's 1's and I's :)
