View Full Version : Buying an existing Video store

I was looking into buying a pre-existing video rental business but wanted to know what the pros and cons of owning one are? Is the video rental business going to be out of business in the near future since it is so much easier to just download a movie of the internet nowadays or rent online (Netflix etc,)?

Contructive criticism welcomed.

Thanks.

From the growing number of Rogers/Blockbuster's and decreasing amounts of independant video stores. I would say unless its a rogers/blockbuster, it might not end up being a lucrative venture.

Family owned video rental businesses are done. Even the big chains are dying. Blockbuster is pretty much on the verge of bankrupcy.

Everyone's getting out.

Thanks a lot for you input guys

wow I just looked at the blockbuster chart and I must say that is quite a decline in just a few years, just like rage said it's only a matter of time until they (and possibly other major video rental businesses) go bankrupt.

I don't understand why someone would rent a movie or game and then wait for it in the mail? If you want it chances are you want it that day and could walk down to blockbuster to get it. Better prices, have it longer? whats the deal...

Soon enough, a person will be able to download a movie in an hour. Set it up to download before dinner, and have it ready to go right after.

That would involve leaving the house, and maybe even a brief amount of walking

Don't forget that everyone is also getting HDTV's

This means most everyone is also getting some kind of cable or satellite box with PPV and the PPV market is also stealing a good chunk of video sales.

I don't rent movies anymore, I just buy them.

As for downloading or waiting for the mail, no thanks. I have better things to do with my time.

Get into talks with rogers or blockbuster, have them
approve, and get them to "co-sign" an agreement.

would be worth the time. and money in the long run you won't have to work, and still make a decent amount of money.

When downloading, you don't have to sit there and watch the status bar. Just set it, and forget it.

That's cause you are :bigpimp:

I haven't rented a movie in a long time. I use PPV or Shaw VOD.

China Town Sells DVD's

I think it's like 3 DVD's for $10.

They have english titles too.

Not too sure if the quality is any good.

Sometimes they are the same quality as legit DVDs. Sometimes you get them with sub-titles that are for the wrong movie...

you need a relatively fast computer, but yeah, i download and watch pretty much everything in either 720p or 1080p, dolby 5.1. ripped straight from hd-dvd or blu-ray.

pretty easy to plug your computer's dvi output into the back of your big plasma tv. if you don't want to do it from a computer, you can buy something like apple tv, and rent movies off of itunes. same thing, interface is a bit nicer.

Seems like a lot of hassle.

I'll just buy my blu ray movies and watch them on my home theater system whenever I feel like.

You can rent movies from the safeway in bowness for $1.49... The thing looks like a vending machine. I'm sure there's some sort of condition where you gotta return in within 24hours to only pay $1.49 however.

You can stream your videos to your xbox 360 as well.. That's what I do... I watch HDTV episodes that I DL off the net, then I watch them on my tv. Comes straight out of the xbox, so you can use your home theater. You just need to have it networked. After the move is over, you can play some games.

It might be a hassle to set it up and get everything worked out at first. But after that it's all good.

Coupe....yer a little behind the times on the whole movies and d/l thing. Yes....All in HD and big theatre sound. I do it with all my movies. I can either burn them to disc or play them thru a media server. I'll d/l 3 or 4 at a time. Come home and I've got them on my HD. a lot of hassle?? lets see, a few mouse clicks and few minutes to burn a disc......as opposed to driving to a store, dropping $30 and driving home....

It's only a matter of time before all media will be d/l'ed. There won't be a need for a b&m storefront anymore. And everything will all be played thru a central media server. Pictures, music, and movies....

I dunno sometimes it's nice to go to a movie rental place and actually have someone who watched alot of movies to suggest movies...some of the best movies I've ever watched are relatively unknown and were suggested by employees at these places that really knew their stuff...
