I've always referred to a BMW car as a bimmer. But everyone I know, with the exception of one, pronounce it beemer. So, I did a little research on it and found these links.

http://www.bmwccbc.org/misc/tech-and-trivia/bimmer.html

http://star-motoring.com/news/story.asp?file=/2007/1/4/ms_features/20070104200129&sec=ms_features

For more info, type in "bimmer or beemer" into google.

I think upwards of 90+% of the population refers to BMW cars as 'beamers' because they just don't know any better. 90+% of BMW car owners KNOW that it is supposed to be 'bimmer' but often don't call it that because they get sick and tired of having to explain to other people the difference. I am one of these guys. I just refer to my car as a BMW most of the time and if I hear people call it a 'beamer' I don't waste my time correcting them. I really don't care.

It was never meant to be an argument. Just curiosity.

This would have actually been an interesting poll if not for all the immature posts that come out every time someone mentions 'BMW' and the mod that felt the need to mess with the poll.

I am pretty sure there is a difference though. Bimmer is the car, while Beamer is the bike. Someone correct me if I am wrong

EDIT: Did a little research and I think this is correct

Oh and it's Bimmer. But I think officially the BMWs have taken over Civics as most ridiculed cars on beyond. Wonder what the next wave will be.

its bimmer. It doesn't matter if you say beemer either because the pronounciation is the same, its just the spelling of it thats wrong.

Then why is the poll "How do you pronounce the BMW Nickname?"

So technically everybody who voted "bimmer" is pronouncing it "bimmer" that rhymes with "simmer" ?

So "Bimmer" is incorrect pronounciation, am I correct?

No
Bimmer = cars (rhymes with simmer)
Beemer = motorcycles (pronounced same as the spelling)

I know a new one.

I have heard some kids this week adding BMW's to the punch buggy, Pinchie Cruiser game. They use "Beaner" and poke each other in the forehead - like 'beaned' in the head.

Just say the letters "B" "M" "W". :drama:

A "beamer" is the crewperson that operated the transporter on Star Trek

why would the car and the bike be pronounced differently? ive always thought that was retarded. theyre both shorthand nicknames derived from the letters "BMW". BMW is pronounced the same way whether it talks about a car or a bike.

Culture

The term "beemer" started as an acronym for the abbreviation "BMW," adapted from the early-20th century British pronunciation of BSA (as /ˈbisə/ or /ˈbizə/), whose motorcycles were often racing BMWs. Over time, the term became closely associated with BMW motorcycles.

In the United States, the term "bimmer" was later coined to refer (exclusively) to BMW automobiles. As such, use of the word "beemer" to refer to a BMW automobile is frowned upon by some BMW enthusiasts,[4] because it is the term used for motorcycles. Although the distinction is completely arbitrary, to this day, the media, movies, and most people still use the term "beemer" to refer to the automobiles.

so basically, "bimmer" was some nonsense word that the douchebag car owners tried to come up with for no reason, and they can't really get it to catch on, because it doesnt make sense :)

:werd: A quick way to tell if someone is a real car enthusiast or not is whether they say Bimmer or Beeemer. There's a reason that all the forums are called bimmerforum, bimmerfest, bimmerworld...and not beamerforum, beamerfest, etc.

Beamer is what uneducated rappers call the car.

I think it really comes down on to how the car is modded. I mean obviously if your front windshield is tinted, you're not going to be able to see your front emblem, meaning it could say whatever and you will never know. Obvious option here is to make up some dumb nickname for it.

If you car isn't modded, you will see the emblem, but you're still a douche and obviously have a much higher IQ. The obvious option there is to start making up words again because your that smart and you can tell Webster to go fuck off with his dumb book of words.

Finally, well there are people like me, who don't own a BMW. We are obviously inferior people, and are not nearly smart enough, so we just go with the fucking obvious and call it a BMW.
