I'm thinking of picking up an STi this summer, however I'm not sure about the locations in calgary with 94 octane (if there are more now) because I never needed it...

Are there still only a few select locations? Or are we lucky to have them a little more abundant now?

thx

I know for sure the mohawk on 16 near Peter's has it.
A lot of huskies/mohawks have 94 octane

Why 94? Can STI's only run on 94? or is that just what is recommended? I'm sure there are STI's running 91.

What does an STi and 94 oct have to do with each other? Do STi's require 94?

no

benyls STI would like 94 judging from his FS thread so theres no knocking whatsoever.

but from factory STIs are at 91 octane

91 would be fine on a stock sti.

91 octane works fine but the owners manual does stipulate that 93 is the prefered choice.

I've been running shell 91 for the last 6 months and so far so good.

Living in the NW sucks for 94 octane. On many occasions I have to grab $10 of 91 and switch my chip to 91 mode just to make it until I'm close to 14th street or 16th ave.

so shell 91, or 91 basically anywhere is okay for a STi? =DD

It's a turbo. And it's never a bad idea to put the highest octane in a turbo to prevent detonation. But if you have the boost increased, it eventually becomes more of a requirement.

What happens if the driving becomes "spirited" and the boost is all the way up with 91?

ty for the help!

well I run ~23lbs on 91, how far do you plan on turning it up?

for the first year or so, probably little to none

Well EVERY husky/mohawk has at least 92 octane.... might help a bit...

Sigh...

The owner's manual on the STi strongly suggests 93 octane. Our 91 Octane is nowhere near as resitant to knock as what you can get south of the border.

On the STi, I have many many datalogs showing pulled timing due to knock activity on our 91 Octane. Fact is, the stock tune does not like our gas. You may think your car is running knock free, but the ECU is pulling a few degrees here and there, and slowly adds it back until it sees more. I never had any knock on the Husky 94.

I now run Shell V-power 91 octane, but I am tuned for it. If you really want to know if the car is happy with the fuel you are using, you will need to pull datalogs. I have a Tactrix cable and laptop to do that if you want.

There are a few of us at www.westernsubaruclub.com who can do that for you.

When is Shell or Esso going to step up to the plate with 94 octane? With more cars going forced induction and direct injection 91 octane just doesn't cut it. I hate putting shit gas like Husky in my car but unfortunately that's life in Alberta with the boost turned up.:(

Does ANY Shell, Esso, or Petro-Canada have 94 octane?

^^ Not than I'm aware of.

Anyone that doesn't want to run Husky 94 can always buy a drum of Toluene and add some each fill up to the 91 they prefer.

Toluene is 114 octane (I believe) so you can do the math with your tank capacity and figure out how much you need to add. I don't think it works out being any more expensive when you compare the cost of 94 to 91 + toluene.

the husky on 16th/edmonton trail is retarded.

probably around half the times i go there they are either out of 94, or the pump is so slow it would take 5 minutes to pump 1 liter of gas.

Holy shit, this guy starts a thread asking about 94 octane locations...and you guys just rag on him about his STI?

Yes, STIs need 94. STIs are tuned quite lean from the factory because that's the only way Subaru can meet emissions requirements using such outdated technology. So as a result of this lean tune, you need good gas to prevent detonation. We are known for shit gas in Alberta already, and the 94 here is just barely good enough for the factory tune.

It's a widely known fact that aftermarket remaps actually improve engine reliability because the tune is richer. Most of those companies also make 2 sets of maps, one for areas with good gas, and one for areas with shit gas, like here in Alberta.
