I would go for an 8500 X50 or a Valintine V1. The 9500i has bugs in it still.

They are legal throughout Alberta IIRC.

BlackFyre

The X50 is by far my favorite, the SR1 is really nice too if you can find it anywhere. And yes, you can use them anywhere in Alberta, I think they're illegal in most other provinces though. I had a guy tell me once if you were traveling through other provinces to carry a self-addressed envelope, and in the chance you get pulled over, toss it in the envelope and seal it because they can't legally check your mail without a warrant. Just my two cents...

400 bux or so for the blue, cheaper for the red display.. I run an x50. Bel 65 sumtin or other is good one too, near the same as the x50 i think.. *ONLY USEFUL ON THE HIGHWAY* I never use mine in the city.

Too much EM/RF interference in the city??

Supa Dexta

Too much crap sets them off from stop lights to automatic doors... That and cops really only use laser in the city.. And are using it more and more on the highway, so you really have to be smart about it. Cause these things are useless for laser..

Why is blue LED more money then the red LED?

Supa Dexta
03-26-2008, 08:48 PM
Cause blue led's are pricier.. And theres like 200 of them in the display..

Most rolling highway radar is KA band which gets picked up a good mile or 2 in advance..

if you are planning to use it in the city you are going to need a laser jammer because they only use laser in the city (the Blinder stuff is the best). Now that stuff is illegal though.

So if i get a laser jamming one then ill get a huge fine for that in the city wont i?
Dose the laser jamming one work on highways?
Do they make laser jamming ones and normal highway ones combined?

laser jammers are laser jammers, they take the laser and scrambles it i think so the radar shows no speed or error. Doesn't matter when and where you use it. Yes you could get fined if they find it.

Detectors are illegal in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec. Legal everywhere else, including all but, I think, 3 US states.

Not legal in NS from what I remember. I actually thought only sask and alb were legal.

Future Shop, Best Buy, Tunerworks...they might just have the RX65. The Car Salon migh have it. Visions should have it. the 8500 is about the same as the RX65...they are the same company. STi is kind of useless unless you plan on driving outside of Alberta.

They work alright in the city, but what you have to understand is they aren't perfect, mine's been set off by random things like automatic doors at stores, lights changing, etc... In my opinion, it's cheaper to slow-down if it goes off and turns out to be nothing, then to do nothing at all and take the ticket. :dunno:

Supa Dexta
03-26-2008, 11:24 PM
We've already said they are useless in the city. Because they don't help you fight laser. And yes they are all legal in alberta.. Radar detectors that is. Laser jammers are another story, but they would be of more use, combine that with a good radar detector, and your in pretty good shape, but prob out 1200-1500 bucks all in...

$1700 should get you an Rx65+ installed.

If your radar detectors are being set off by automatic doors then you haven't set them up properly. Cops in our area don't use X or K band anymore, turn them off.

Curious.. What's wrong with the 9500?

LMVantage
03-27-2008, 10:49 PM
The Valentine 1 is awesome. There are 3 modes, one of which filters out the bogeys it deems to not be a threat. Driving by grocery stores, in "All Bogey" mode (the kind of mode other detectors are always in) you'll have 6 or more go off. When I'm on Advance Logic mode, only 1 or 2 are picked up.

Mibz
03-27-2008, 11:33 PM
If you buy a decent radar detector you should be able to customize which bands are set off and which ones aren't. I'm not saying the Valentine 1 isn't a good detector, because it is, I'm just saying that it's not the only one that will do those things. I like it more for the directional features than anything. It's nice not having to look around like I'm lost trying to find the cop.

The 9500 is an absolute waste of money if you ask me. None of its unique features are useful.
TrueLock shouldn't be necessary since we're all smart enough to turn off X and K bands.
Auto-sensitivity is a terrible idea. Radar goes off when you're stopped as well. If you're at a light and somebody gets hit up the road you want to be able to read that. The false alarms it's designed to reduce should, again, be gone with band customization.
SpeedAlert is redundant for two reasons. If you look at that thing and comprehend your speed before braking you'll be shown your speed again on the ticket. You've also got a really big round speedometer right in front of you.
Mark location would be good if you could flash your unit with locations from other people but since you can only add your own, it's just a backup for you own memory. Maybe I'm the only one who remembers where I've seen cops, but I doubt it.

Everything else you can get in a detector for half the price.

Just get the best.

If ur using all that money why not go for the top of the line?

It's been #1 for over 5 years and that clearly indicates a great product.

The passport x50 - I got mine for SixBills when it was out and don't regret it.

If you are spending that kind of money, get the best.

Give this a read: http://forums.beyond.ca/st/128206/lots-of-people-seem-to-be-shopping-for-radar-detectors-please-read-this/

Radar detectors are a waste of money in most situations.

If you only drive in provinces where radar detectors are legal, the Valentine1, Escort Passport X50, or the Beltronics STi Driver are the ones you want.

If you drive in provinces where radar detectors are illegal as well (like I do), you want the Beltronics STi Driver, since it is the only detector out there that cannot be picked up by the Spectre RDD. I have the STi Driver myself, and it's a GREAT detector.

Another thing is that the STi Driver does an EXCELLENT job of picking up the Multanova radar (Mobile speed cameras), it's saved me plenty of times.

Having said that, radar detectors are useful on the highway, but in the city, everything is LIDAR, so you'll need a laser jammer.

TorqueDog
03-28-2008, 09:15 AM
Exactly. Radar detector detector. The RCMP in Manitoba use it, and the OPP in Ontario use it. Not sure about other provinces. Many states that outlaw RD use have Spectre III RDDs running.

The Bel STi is the only one that cannot be picked up by the Spectre RDD all the way to the current Spectre III. Reason is because of its magnesium casing, it doesn't allow any RF leakage, which is what the RDD looks for.

RadarBusters.com (http://www.radarbusters.com/laser-jammers/6524+6527.cfm?viewall=yes) lists the two-head jammers (front protection only) for ~$460 USD, while the four-head jammers (can be used for double front end protection [good for large vehicles], or for front and rear protection) are around ~$650. They will gladly ship to Canada, that's how I got mine.

I had my Blinder installed at AutoTemp just off of MacLeod. Still need to get it installed in the M5 though.

Concealed units are worthless for three reasons: One is that you can't move it from vehicle to vehicle (so you'd need one for each vehicle you own). The second is that the range on the radar detector and the performance of the jammers are usually poor in comparison to dedicated units. And the third is that even though your unit is 'concealed', a Spectre RDD will still sniff it out because it leaks RF.

found this place called autotech over on 12st 44 ave and they got me hooked up with a jammer for 725 installed. Thats only the one with front jammers, as the front and rear on would have been 1025. I finally went through a speed trap and the jammer started screamming, so i slowed down to posted speed limit and turned jammer off. Anyone and everyone that has a heavy foot needs to get one of these. It works. Also the install was so hidden that i had to look twice at my front of car to see if i really have the jammer there. Hats off to you APS!!!!!!!

- TrueLock does allow you to turn off false signals, but it's smart enough to detect different strengths of the same band. So if a cop parts in front of Safeway, you're still alerted. Normally you would just ignore the warning and get caught.

Auto-sensitivity is a terrible idea. Radar goes off when you're stopped as well. If you're at a light and somebody gets hit up the road you want to be able to read that. The false alarms it's designed to reduce should, again, be gone with band customization.

- I think it's a great idea personally. The radar detector is tied to your GPS unit. It actually does go off when your sitting still (ie. it doesn't go silent). Based on your speed, it adjusts your sensitivity. You go faster, the radar detector becomes more sensitive. It's way better than a manual switch, since you never need to remember to flip it.

SpeedAlert is redundant for two reasons. If you look at that thing and comprehend your speed before braking you'll be shown your speed again on the ticket. You've also got a really big round speedometer right in front of you.

- Again, I disagree. The detector is mounted at eye level. When it goes off, you don't need to look down (at your big speedometer) and refocus your eyes (which is more dangerous since your travelling at high speeds).

Mark location would be good if you could flash your unit with locations from other people but since you can only add your own, it's just a backup for you own memory. Maybe I'm the only one who remembers where I've seen cops, but I doubt it.

- That's promised in future firmware updates. There is a mini USB port on the unit that's not just for "memory backups".

Everything else you can get in a detector for half the price. [/B]

- Can you provide an example of a detector you can get for about $225 (1/2 the price of the 9500) that has it's range and sensitivity? As well as it's upgradability?

Yup.. I bought one, and although it's a little more expensive, all it's features more than justify the cost.
