View Full Version : Do I have DRL's?

So I know that sounds like a bit of a dumb question, but here's the deal. I recently brought in an E46M3 from the US. When buying the dealer told me he didn't think the car had day time running lights. So, before bringing it in I make the appt with BMW Gallery to have the DRL reprogramming (b/c they book so far out). Anyways, I get the car and when started both inside headlights (not the two outside halogen lights) automatically come on and they don't turn off in any light switch position. To me that indicates that I have DRLs, but I'm wondering what exactly classifies as having DRL's? Do the halo's have to be programmed to light on start up? This could save me a few hundred dollars on the reprogram.

My understanding is that they must NOT have the ability to be turned off by the driver. If there is that option at all, then it has to be fixed. But otherwise, you should be good to go....

Those are DRLs.

The Halos are not standard on the car and are an aftermarket part.

Sweet, thanks guys. May have just saved a few hundred bones from going into the Gallery's pocket for bullsh!t reasons :whipped:

Nah, they will charge you anyway.

Part of the import process.

Yeah they will charge me $260 to say "yip, you have DRL's" or $400 to say "Nope, you don't have DRL's" and then reprogram. Only then can I have the privilage of ordering the $500 recall letter.

Oh well, still saving by going south

Until you try to resell and then realize that everyone expects you to pass the savings onto them.

The typical way to do it is to wire up a relay. But you can rig it up any way you want, BMW will still charge you to do it themselves, otherwise you won't get your letter and you won't be able to register your vehicle.

Why wire that shit up when it can be done with software?

stupid question, I was wondering if the halos would pass as drls? I assume they are on all the time
