The tractor-trailer drove the wrong way for at least 15 kilometres, seemingly trying to target oncoming traffic, said trucker Ken Kerlak, who was having his truck serviced at the Peterbilt shop near 184th Street. He did not witness the accident, but he said he talked to several motorists who saw it all.

Kerlak said several cars swerved off the highway to avoid the truck; others rear-ended each other.

The tractor-trailer finally climbed the cement barrier along the south side of the overpass, rode the cement barrier as if it was on a monorail, then toppled off and landed upside down beside the train tracks.

The impact sheared off the truck's fuel tanks and it burst into flames, Kerlak said.

What's with Edmonton and drivers who drive the wrong way on 1 way streets?

I've personally dodged a drunk driver going the wrong way once before and just a couple days ago I was in a buddy's car and the same thing happened.

I read the news stories posted above and saw the Global Edm video.

UNLESS I MISSED SOMETHING, it seems to me as though all we know so far is that a Semi travelled for 20 km on the opposite side of the road, and then finished off that journey by riding a median, falling down into an underpass/railroad tracks, and exploding into a fiery ball.

And then... what? Somebody's concluding this??

This was someone in desperate need of help! Depression at its worst! Why people want to take other lives is just plain crazy!

Ok, so perhaps it was suggested by Global News when they included that one other trucker's speculations. That in my opinion is poor journalism. The news writers were too chicken to come up with that conclusion, yet they were thinking it.. so their solution was that have someone say it as a sound bite.

Police are still quiet about it, yet everyone's already reached their own individual conclusions?

Willful intent to cause harm and then self terminate in an EPIC manner would have been my conclusion too.

..but I wouldn't suggest that if I were a newsman. This is why Global Fails.

Cool of them to have a video though.

Yeah it's a pretty crappy city as far as Canada is concerned but you obviously haven't been to Cleveland and surrounding Ohio areas.

Pretty crazy though. I'm interested to see if the driver lost it or was it a case of intoxication, etc.

Just seen on the news that the driver suffered from diabetes and was having an hypoglycemia attack. I based my earlier statement on the media and how they said he was "aiming" for motorists.

RIP

Ya i seen that on the edmonton news.....its really sad how we all base an opinion on the first thing we all see. Its sad...but does anyone know if you can feel an attack coming on? And would or could he have been able to stop before it was that far in to it? Im sad for his young family, it didnt have to end that way.

The news reported that the guy suffered from frequent diabetic shock episodes. Witnesses were reporting that he did not appear to be fully conscious behind the wheel and was kind of slumped over. So for all we know, he was not lucid enough to know what he was doing that entire time.

He should not have been driving, if the family knew he had these episodes, what was he doing with a license, let alone driving a semi. :banghead:

He finally came to terms that the Oilers were not going to make the playoffs, despite their 12 game winning skid. So he decided to just end it and go down in flames. Ironically the Oilers were beat out by the flames last night. Kind of a poetic death actually. ;) lol jk

I think it was more like 14 km. Speed in that section is 100 km/hr, so he blanked out for like 10 minutes, give or take.

As a truck mechanic myself, I highly doubt that. These trucks are air brakes, and in the event of a complete air loss the brakes are applied unlike a car's brake system, if you loose oil, you loose brakes. And if some freak happening caused the air loss, and all 4 60ton spings broke at the same time leaving the driver with no brakes there is still multiple ways to slow a vehicle down without brakes. As most of you guys drive 5 speed transmissions you know that you can almost bring a car to a stop just by down shifting. A loaded simi might take longer, but can still accomplish this the same as a car. There are also other methods such as engine brakes, or trailer brakes which are on a seperate system altogether.

On the news it states that the vehicle slowed down, and sped up multiple times beore crashing over a 15km distance. This indicates to me he was well aware of what was happening and was fully in control. Others have speculated possiable black out's of medical reasons, but common, this guy stayed between the lines, although heading in the wrong direction, for 15k. Had he of been passed out behind the wheel this truck would of hit the ditch miles ago.

lets all be glad no innocent people were hurt. Cars are replacable, life is not.

Jay911
04-02-2008, 04:36 PM
As someone who has treated people who are diabetic and have been in medically-related stupors in the past, I can completely believe that the poor guy was not "fully in control". Even someone who has been so tired they're falling asleep at the wheel can still keep it between the lines for a great distance, yet still fuck up bad enough to really ruin someone's day.

He very well could have been aware he was in serious trouble and rather than pull over and call for help, decided he needed to get just that last "short" distance (to a trucker, 40km is peanuts) to whereever he needed to be, and get help there. He could have thought he was in the right lanes, and only been partially cognizant of his surroundings.

Unless there's proof that he had murderous intent, I'm content to keep believing that he had a medical emergency, and be saddened that he lost his life - yet thankful that no one else was hurt in the process.

Hopefully people who encounter this story will have it reinforced to them that if they are not able to focus on their driving, be it because of a medical problem, fatigue, drunkenness, etc., that they get off the road and let someone else deal with it.
