Hello beyonders, I was wondering where's a good place to travel in Alberta. I want to see the outdoors as much as possible and would like to stay in a cabin or somewhere inside for the night. Somewhere where it's bang for you buck and do as many activities as possible ie: horseback riding, hiking, eating, scenery and ect. It would be for 3 days at the most.

Thank you for all the beyonders that reply

Cheers

banff or jasper would do the trick.

banff is a little more money but has more going on, jasper is a little more laid back.

they both have cabins galore and all kinds of outdoor activities, it may be low season right now until the schoolkids are done for the year- so it will be a good time to go.

Nope, but I've been to Kananaskis plenty of times. Loads of hiking, never stayed at a cabin there though, so couldn't recommend any. Kananaskis Lodge has an awesome brunch though.

banff area is good. sulphur mountain gondola, johnston canyon/grotto canyon, lake minnewanka. emerald lake is a really cool getaway, but its a few KM into the bc border, turnoff by field.

johnston canyon is nice. i think its couple of exits after banff exit goin west. There are waterfalls that are really beautiful.

Elbow falls is nice too. you take 22x off deerfoot and follow it till u reach there.

The Lake Louise area is nice, a bit busy though. Great hikes up around Moraine Lake and there are also some hike up the Icefield Parkway that are close by. You can also access trails in Yoho as well if you drive about 20 minutes west on the Trans Canada.
The Lake O'Hara area in Yoho National Park is one of my favourite places to hike. You need to check ahead of time as the limit the amount of people that can go up. But the views from the Alpine Circuit are amazing and well worth it. If you can book a spot on the bus, you can probably do a hike here as a day trip from the Lake Louise area.

+1 for Emerald lake. Banff etc is too busy and gets boring after going there half a dozen times a year.

Or Radium  The last 25KMs or so before you reach radium has some nice curvey roads :D It's a little bit into BC, most of the drive is just going around a mountain. If you could go straight from Banff to Radium through the mountain it'd take you literally 30 minutes.

I guess it depends on when your going Waterton Lakes is fabulous but don't you think it's pretty seasonal?

I also like going to Cypress Hills either AB or SK side.

You have lots of stuff in and around Rocky Mountain House, Buck Lake is right there for fishing or water skiing/wakeboarding, some good campsites.

Last time I remember it would be about June before I would go to Waterton because of the wind and cold.

I just went to the Prince of Wales hotel site they don't even seem to take reservations for any of the packages until June.

Yes camping there is fabulous, as long as you are extremely cautious of your food because of bears. Lots of great hiking, and it's popular but not like Banff.

In Alberta, do you need a fishing license?

Jasper, bit of a drive, but even the drive alone is worth it.

July 19 2008 is "Thunder in the Valley" It is a great fireworks display. Bigger then the Stampede. There is also tons of outdoor stuff to do. Climb Turtle Mountain or Crowsnest Mountain if you are in the area for the weekend .
