what would you say to someone who thinks that changing your oil every 50 000 km is sufficient? ( feel free to be cruel!)

So I was at the Mini Crowfoot dealership one day because my brother was buying a 08 cooper s and she said that you don't have to do an oil change till one year past.

Is it true?

no idea but i have a buddy who has a family member who ownes and operates a bunch of cabs and says he only changes the oil every 50000k. I thought he was kidding but he wasnt. and when i say i change mine every 3000k with royal purple we just argue so i need some more tech savvy beyonders to settle it

Ahaha, Theres a guy who trades his car in every 80,000kms or so. He either blows a motor or a turbo from lack of maintinance... Every 50k is just ridiculars!

I bet at 50k, no matter what the oil is, the oil comes out as sludge, black and shit.

I would tell him to start planning on buying a new fleet before 100,000km

That's a bit too long, but anyone who changes their oil on a street car (that's being driven like a street car) every 3k is also a dolt :p.

Nothing wrong with keeping your oil clean, changing it early won't harm your engine.

well considering i spent an arm and a nut on an engine i dont mind the extra 100 every couple months just to make sure its clean and sludge free, even if it is a bit much. all input is appreciated tho, thx

Some people do it every 5,000 to err on the side of caution, I've heard that 10k-15k is more realistic, but 50,000 is pushing it, why take the chance over saving $30.00 to change your oil?

Thats why you see half the cabs puffing out blue smoke on the road.

I once new a guy that said (wondering why his engine went) "oil? I thought the engine came with oil?"...

50k is terrible, no wonder cabs drive like shit, but you do see a lot of older ones on the road...:dunno:

I seem to recall a short lived comedy, about a college kid who had to move back home, his Mini Cooper blew it's engine and his dad flipped on him when he said "Oil? But dad, these come with oil from the dealership!"

Maybe it was based on your friend

Haha, its great to see this thread, I have had this discussion so many times!

I personally change my oil every 8k, keeps everything nice and regular!

I know a guy that waited 26,000 km's on his civic. He fried the engine 8 ways from Sunday. It ONLY cost him $3k for a new engine. So yeah, why not shoot for 50,000km's?

About that Mini dealership recommending to come back after a year
 yeah I'd DEFINATELY call BS on that one. ;)

I do 3,000 km oil changes on my bike, and do 5k oil change on my cars, and I use AmsOil for all of them.

The new Porsche Cayenne V8 (non-turbo) is once every year or 25,000km

I change my oil ever 2500 km. oil is cheap, an engine is not. We had a customer with a turbo pt crapper come in complaining of "no power". 50 000 km with out an oil change means new turbo and long block and a $11,000 bill.

Unless you keep topping it up, there may not be an oil left after driving 50k.

What kind of idiot thinks up things like this?

Dads new turbo audi only needs an oil change once a year or every 20k. But i think 50 is just crazy.

just tell him to change his oil once it gets darker than yellow

poor car 50 000 km and no oil change....

megavolt

50000 would ever be over the wild extended change invervals that AMSOIL advertises (25000 miles I believe, about 40000KM). Wow...

bmeier

changing your oil in a street car every 2500km is a ridiculous waste.

Synthetic oil is made to have extended life cycles, if you are going to change synthetic oil every 5000 km just use regular oil instead.
Do you think the manufacturer would specify such high intervals for an oil change if it was bad for the car?

also just because your oil is a darker color does not mean its worn out.

50 000 km is obviously a bit exaggerated but 5000 km these days is too low

What is it with those people who only poop once every 3-4 days??? How do they do it? I need my 2-3 daily poopy.

I used to change mine 5k with mobile1, but I'm going to try 8 - 10k with royal purple.

I knew a young guy who bought an STi brand new in 04. Didn't change the oil at all. 46,000 kms came around, and his engine FINALLY went on him.

I think it's part of the road life, just not used to each town's own germs/water source. Plus I was raised not to waste food so the crew treats me like a garbarator with random un-eatten subway and McDicks. (I got the: "when I was your age, our family of 300 shared 1 loaf; so don't tell me you can't finish that bite of T-bone")

Dude for an extra ~$1/litre, I think it's worth it... I definitely hear the difference (mobile vs. R.P.)... got mine in the US $6.99/L (not sure how much here, switched over while I was there)

This is interesting since Mack used to tell customers who owned fleet to change there oil every 80,000km. I have to admit that year I did a lot of in frames... Coincidence? I think not. The oil was just disgusting when it would come out.
