Seeing as how Spring has arrived, the snow is almost gone, and Summer is near, lets talk bikes.

1. What are you riding.
2. Favourite trails around town
3. Tips/Tricks
4. Possible Beyond Mountain Bike Excursion?

1. Currently Bikeless
2. Rode the Weaslehead/Res area daily years ago. Canmore Nordic Centre, and some trails around Banff.
3. Always bring a bear bell.

I am a lifelong Specialized guy who has outgrown my old school Hard Rock. It had Judy XC Long Travel up front which I adored.

It is time for a new rig. Currently looking at spending 800-1,200. Hard tail only. Been out of the bike scene for a few years... Any insight?

1. 2007 Rocky ETSX-70
2. Jumping Pound Ridge. Amazing views, fairly easy ride.
3. Bonking is really bad, carry a couple of extra energy gels, and if you are on a long ride they do come in handy.

1. currently bikeless, but shopping for one and should be ready for trails as soon as the snow's all gone.
considering the following options:
2008 Specialized Stumpjumper Expert, or Enduro SL
2007/2008 RM ETSX-70
2. powderface long loop
3. nothing
4. i'm down, most of my riding buddies have moved away.

WICKED THREAD!!!

1)Bike for this year is my Giant Faith, still dont have the 5000$ for the new glory.... gonna run the avid juicy 7's this year..

2) For my XC trail that i run my specialized hardtail on are mostly in fish creek, if we do a group ride this year, i have a great 22K ride that runs the majority of the southwest of fish creek. great ride! For the DH, im seasons passing at COP and fernie this year but i will be a regular guest at panorama, kicking horse, silverstar and hopefully get to whistler again this year.

3) my only tip is when you eat shit, tuck and roll baby!!! and carbon fibre knuckle gloves= life saver!

4) always down for the riding adventures!

If anyone is looking to start riding or to brush up on their skills, get the book " mastering mountain bike skills" by brian lopes and/or get the DVD "fundamentals".. those are the 2 best biking tools i have ever used!!!!

Just finished my first ride of the year, I am totally out of shape after the long winter.

I rode all winter...gotta love the Moose mountain gravel road. I would ride that to the parking lot from the highway. Great way to keep in shape through the winter.

1. 07 Specialized Stupmjumper Pro - WITH Crossmax SL wheel set. Oh man...best ever.

2. Everything, moose, coxhill, powder, big elbow loop etc.

3. Tip - be VERY careful riding through puddles/ruts in the early spring, they can be really tricky...ice on the bottom, water melts from the top down. Fell HARD a couple weeks ago while riding through a puddle about 3 inches deep.

Jelly beans work the best for me for longer rides. I usually pack 30-40 in my pack and eat about 10 an hour. Of course, water.

I am always down for a group ride, let me know when and where!

1. 07' Kona Volcano Ridge

2. Haven't done much trail riding, use it more for commuting to and from the c-train. Though I would love to get into trail riding this season.

3. I am too much of a "rookie" to have tips :D

4. I would love to do a beyond bike excursion, I just hope I would be able to keep up!

1. 2006 .243 hardtail, 4" sherman jumper, dual 24"s, brakeless (for now)
2. I pretty much only ride at millenium, or street downtown.
3. No footer - get decent air, take your feet off, and put em back on. key is to look down at your pedals so you can see where to put your feet back.
4. sure. As you can see I dont really "mountainbike", im closer to bmx. This summer i'm hoping to build up a 5-6" travel dualie and ride some trails, in fernie, moosemtn, etc.

Nice Thread! I was wondering when a mountain biking one was going to appear now that we are starting to hit some decent weather

1. 06 Specialized Enduro Elite, 04 Rocky Mountain Element 50
2. Usually ride Fish Creek as I live very close to it and it's easy to go after work and get some singletrack in
3. I 2nd the above tip about bringing a hyrdation pack! Perfect for drinking water, and also carrying some food along with the biking essentials, tube, pump, cellphone, keys, money etc.
4. Not sure about some possible excursions. Some out of town ones would be nice to ride, like minnewanka, maybe elbow loop. In town there is a fair amount to ride and maybe easier to set up a group ride within the city.

I need some opinions on the new specialized enduro SL's. Anybody have experience or know of someone who has ridden one? I was considering buying one, but I'm not entirely convinced by the completely proprietary suspension.

You may want to do some seraching on the mtr (mountain bike reviews) messages boards http://forums.mtbr.com

They have a manufacturer section where they have a board devoted to specialized bikes. You can find alot of good info here about people of who first hand knowledge of owning an Enduro SL.

Have you considered the Specialized Pitch? It's very similiar to the Enduro SL, but without the proprietary front and rear suspension.

Lovin' the monty, though it could use a Chris King or Hope rear hub for more engagement points. It's a good starter bike though.
24" wheels are nice for downhill and street (manuals/wheelies), but not the best for climbing I find.

Thanks dude. It should be good. The bike seems to be great value for what you pay. Under 2,000. Can't wait for the white stuff to fade away.

Does anyone run a GPS system on their bike? I am looking at the Garmin Edge 305 right now. Seems like a cool unit with how you can download routes from Google maps. Also pretty cheap at $400.

4) beyond meet @ COP? seeing as its prolly tough for alot of people to take an out of town trip.

Too bad COP doesnt have a bigger drop than 8 ft thought :( I heard they are making something bigger this year, anyone heard if thats true?

I have been to Moab to ride one year ago at the begging of march in 2007. It was an awesome time and the riding was amazing! in the 4 days of riding I had, we started with Amasa Back on day 1, SlickRock Trail day 2, Flat Pass Day 3, and Day 4 was a relaxed recovery day riding at Bartlett Wash.

Out of all the trails we did, I really like Amasa Back! The downhill on the way back was very fun, and Flat Pass had some nice long downhill sections too. I really liked Slickrock as well as its very unique and fun. Those climbs on it were incredibly brutal. I made it up a fair amount, but by the time we were past the half way point I was getting very very tired!

Other trails I'd of loved to try if i was there longer would of been Porcupine Rim (shuttled of course!), Sovereign, Poison Spider. So many good trails though, it would a few trips to cover them all. I know that its just a matter of time before I make my way back there

I've also heard alot of good things about Fruita as well. Seeing pictures and videos from Joe's Ridge, I'd love to ride this trail one day

The only trail I have been on this year is Moose mountain road (way up) and sulpher springs (way down). Everything else is way to snowy. If I was you I would stick with your regular trails in the city until it dries out. If you do feel like braving it head to Bragg creek.

At the main 4 way stop, head left (up the hill) and follow that to the T-intersection. Take a right. Follow that road...most of the rides will be on the right hand side. You will start to see parking lots after about 10 minutes of driving, these are all good rides. Powderface parking lot has 3 awesome rides...again, I have not been on any of these this year, they look very snowy when we drive past them on the way to moose.

Here is a desc. of powder...there are WAY longer rides than the creek ride but I would start there.

Powderface Creek Trail

Preview: The trail begins approximately 12.4 miles southwest of Bragg Creek on Highway 66. This 5.3 miles point-to-point or out-and-back trail traverses the foothills of the Elbow Valley and climbs toward the lower slopes of Powderface Ridge. It then descends quickly to its terminus at the Powderface Trail Road. Most of the trail is good singletrack trail with some sections that have a tendency to get muddy. Due to the solid climb toward the summit of Powderface Creek, this trail requires a high fitness level. However, if you are quite fit and don't mind some lengthy uphill climbing, this trail is an enjoyable test for your legs at the beginning of the season. Since it lies in the foothills, it's often free of snow long before some of the more remote, high elevation trails.

Your best bet to find rides that suit your riding would be to pick up a riding guide (bow has them). A lot of rides out there can be advanced and some can be super long (big elbow is pushing 50kms) and you do not want to get stuck out there. The guys at bow will know all of these rides very well. Three years ago my brother and I bought one and we havn't looked back, there are dozens of unreal rides 25 minutes from Calgary.

I'd go to Mountain Equipment Coop, or any bike shop in the city and pick up a copy of Backcountry Biking in the Canadian Rockies. This book is loaded with trails in K country and has directions to finding the trailheads along with a map of the trail and distance, gradient etc. Very useful in helping you figure out what to ride!

Here is a link in case you are wondering what the book looks like including a pdf sample of Elbow loop trail: http://www.rmbooks.com/books/easbac.htm

Question: what do you all think the best tires are for XC riding? I was looking into maybe the Panaracer Fire XC Pro, just wondering some other suggestions. I've got a spcialized hard rock and the tires on it now are 1.95" width, so I can't go much wider than that.

+1 more for the nevegals, great tires. IRC makes some great tires too, I ran the tubeless mibro's for a season of hard riding and don't have a bad thing to say about them.

I find the outside nobs on the Fire XC's too tall and they generally don't work that great IMO.

Now you just have to learn how to ride it ;)

yah, some people love the firepro's and some hate them cause they are too wobbly from the high nubs...they are cheap though (www.pricepoint.com) for the price you can't go wrong.

I am running tubless mibro's and love them, no more pinch flats!!! In fact, I have rode about 250kms this year and have not had one flat.

Has anyone checked out COP yet? I went today and it was decent for day 2. Everything else should be up by next weekend apparently... There were 3 runs that I could find open today. I also saw some noob fly off his bike and do a 180 mid air into the trees on the Dragon Slayer run  :bigpimp:

1. What are you riding.
2. Favourite trails around town
3. Tips/Tricks
4. Possible Beyond Mountain Bike Excursion?

1. Still deciding (had a Condorde 8yrs ago)
2. Didn't have one

I'm think of getting another bike, what do you guys recommend, I'm think of these brands names Canondale, Gary Fisher, Kona or Santa Cruz.

I'm just getting back into it so I don't need full suspension and nice pair of fork would be nice. Where can I find the info I'm looking for in Calgary. (honest info not just a place that sells a bike because of comm.)

The type of riding I'm gonna do is mostly in town or COP and maybe once in a while out of town. Looking for a cool mountain bike

Thank you for all you info.;)

Barely anything was open, but the trails have been widened a bit, a lot of new brigdes/old ones replaced with new wood, jumps, the whole lot. Can't wait for it to dry out!

^^it can be tuff to find unless someone shows you.

Rode powderface ridge last week, prety good shape. Still snow at the saddle. I think we were one of the first to ride it this year. NO bike tracks past the first sign.

I'm just happy it's stopped raining, for the most part anyways, there has been a few times I've come back looking like some sort of swamp creature out of a sci-fi flick these past few days.

So true, I've been pulling some strange shit out of my drivetrain after the past few rides. I hate cleaning my bike after every ride...it can't be good for it.

There is no way I am going to hump my 40+ pound Stinky Bitch up that road again!! Did it once, never again!!!

I promise to drive past you slow as to not kick up dust while passing you in the shuttle!! And in true old school form of Mtn biking ways...we will wait for you! haha

omg, 40 pounds? Jesus...yah, I wouldn't ride that up either. I have been tempted so many times to grab a lift from some of the DH guys...they drive by me shaking their head, prob thinking Im the stupidest person ever. :D
