Well I finally got a new (read: old) car.

It's almost in better condition than my civic.

I inherited it from my grandma. It has 114xxx km's on it. A little surface rust, and one rust hole in the hatch. No plans for it yet. Except maybe reinforce the rear bumper haha.

The interior is fantastic considering the age. It has the original... well everything. AM radio, lighter socket. The lights all work. The ONLY thing that needs work in order to pass an OOP is getting the rear-defroster to work (The wires have been detached). Car runs great. Been maintained. Currently registered/insured under BC plates til '09.

It's a 1978 Pinto. Automatic transmission, 2dr, RWD, 2.3L engine.

Picked it up this weekend from Vancouver... Very hellish.

Plan was to tow it back to Calgary on a uhaul trailer.

Getting her ready to go up.

And we're good.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/Vetrius/IMG_4227.jpg

Alas... I forgot how to get out...

And then... I squeeze back in to close the window..

Strapping it down.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/Vetrius/IMG_4240.jpg

Ready to go.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/Vetrius/IMG_4244.jpg

Taking up 5 spots at Superstore.

Now here's where it gets interesting. I'm in the passenger seat asleep, when I get woken up by us stopping... 20km out of hope... going up the coquihalla. Turns out we were billowing big clouds of white smoke. Dropping oil everywhere, been leaving a trail for a while... Yea, that's right, I blew the tranny of a 97 1/2 ton Chevy towing a pinto up the coquihalla.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/Vetrius/IMG_4298.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/Vetrius/IMG_4299.jpg

$200 tow ride back to Hope. Left the truck at a shop to get fixed (it's still there) they're going to rebuild the transmission. Truck had 220XXX km's on it, a towing package, but no aftermarket transmission cooler. My dumb mistake.

We decided that with someone following us home, we would drive the pinto back to Calgary... So after staking out the night, and most of the next day, waiting for backup, we chilled out.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/Vetrius/IMG_4322.jpg
Getting ready to head out in Hope, BC.

Pinto got us all the way home with no problems... Didn't take the coquihalla, as I didn't want to get stuck on it again. Only problem was the lack of music. Took 14 hours from Hope, long ass drive. Pinto took a dirt road uphill with snow/ice like a champ.

I'm the white guy with the toque and the asian guy is gp36912. Pictures were taken by Hybridtheory. Couldn't of made it through the weekend without them.

good read. That pinto has really low KM's on it, are you going to turbo that? :D

Cool it comes with the General Lee door mod... exiting and entering through the window.

Only 114K on it, pretty good. Should be a fun car to work on and restore (new paint, maybe same colour?)

Don't worry about a swap just yet. Your priority should be to "christen" it with as many girls as you can! That thing is awesome!! Brown too!!

You might want to reinforce the rear bumper before you do anything else to the car.

LilDrunkenSmurf
04-09-2008, 10:35 AM
First things first, I want to reinforce that rear bumper. Then I want to get some more power into the thing... My civic make the thing look like a turtle. I also want to do a manual tranmission swap. I'm not sure if I want to go turbo, or N/A. I also want to get some classic looking rims on there, but really I have no idea what kind I would want.

As for paint, I was thinking "if" I do repaint it, I would go black or white.. the problem is that fabric top, I don't know how hard it would be to restore/replace/paint.

Don't quote me on this, but re-applying stayfast to the roof should not be too bad.

Remember "Phantom Tops?" Same deal. Obviously the hardest part would be tearing the old stuff off. Perhaps you could just put the new stayfast over top. :dunno:

Hahaha nice thread buddy! Well that was certainly an adventure getting out there and getting the car home.

I vote for the black and white paint job. Or if you really want to be crazy, make it green like the one that Big has from the Rob & Big show.

Man don't paint it, at this point everyone knows that if you see a crappy model car that is well taken care of and painted, it's a sleeper.

Wow it looks like its in fantastic condition. Lots of potential. 5.0L or 2.3T either or would make for one hell of a fun ride.

Welcome to the club! A 2.3 turbo would drop right in, your car has all the correct mounts. Don't worry about the gas tank, the early pinto's like mine were the exploding ones. If you compare your rear bumper to mine (orange pinto above) you'll notice the difference. Also you can insure your car under Canadian broker link's Vintage vechicle program for $130 a year, as long as your over 25. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRIY5H7pDuo&feature=related

I'd get a fuel cell for it. Fuck the bumper if you really care about safety. But yeah a decent engine would make that thing go like a raped ape on PCB.

These guys build AWESOME engines for a damn reasonable price.

I was going to get my blown 383 through these guys for my '90 Trans am GTA project, but I have to sell the car due to space concerns:(

Cool car, I wish it was mine.

If I understand the bumper problem, it is caused by the rear bumper shocks piercing the gas tank when hit hard.

I would love to (detail + DTP), problem is that it's still got the BC plates on it... I want to get it registered in AB ASAP, which means insurance, OOP, all that jazz... But I gotta get my ass into gear and get that rear defroster working... Any tips? Baha

dont forget how the tow truck spewed all its hydraulic fluid from its popped hose trying to unload the truck. lol that was the funniest thing to watch. and i'll probably end up working on it with him lol.

Oh ya Jory, you didn't post those pics up. It would have been funnier if I got a shot of the hydraulic fluid spewing from the truck.

Start by shooting me a PM. I have a Merkur; manual trans and T3 turbo, looking to swap out the drivetrain. I can sell you the complete setup if you are interested. The 2.3 in the Merkur is rated at 175 hp, and with intercooling and some easy mods you are over 200.
