My friend is trying to sell her camera for $150, but gets sent 2x$850 scotiabank money orders (from ontario) with the attached document stating to send the remaining to paris through western union. So obviously this is a scam but I don't see the logic in sending $1700 to her just to send to someone else? Anyone have any insight to this?

She sends the money, and then about 2 weeks later the bank comes looking for her cause the money orders bounce cause they're fake....it's a pretty old scam.

It was used on cars for sale for the longest time, they would send extra for shipping then you send whatever is left over back along with the car.

yeah i heard about the car ones before. I thought money orders were safe since you had to pay them with cash upfront.

^^ Thats exactly the point. The more credible a scam is the better it works.

I'd get her to give them to the bank and get them to check them out, if she deposits them she "could" get in trouble it's kinda like depositing counterfeit money.

There's like a million to 1 chance they could be real....

Money orders and certified cheques are NOT guaranteed...there's thousands of counterfeit items out there. Worst mistake people make is thinking that they're always legit.

Always give them time to clear before you give someone an item if they pay with a certified or a MO. Or...have your bank fax the item to the branch where it was issued to get it verified.

and for the record, this isn't a "backwards" scam. This is the same old "forwards" scam.
