View Full Version : Options for cars?

My gf is looking to buying a car, new or slightly used (less than 25,000K). Under $25,000 preferably. Right now she is looking at a used base RSX or the Toyota Echo Hatch. Can anyone else think of any other cars that might be good. Good on gas, very reliable, speed is not so much a factor, looks appeal and no civics. She also doesn't like the Matrix so if anyone has any other ideas that would be great. She was also buying an Element but the dealership screwed around with that, so that is off the list now.

thanx in advance

New VW golf is good on gas, practical.

Echo hatch or RSX are both very good choices. I also really like the infiniti G20. Production was stopped in 2002.

Toyota Celica is also an awesome car.

If your going to try and get a Spec V try and find a 2003. Most (me included) think the 2004 looks horrible.

VW Golf or Jetta
Hyundia Tiberon (bad re-sale value)
or perhaps a Subaru Impreza 2.5RS

I'd consider a Golf TDI. Great power, fuel efficiency and will probably be incredibly reliable.

RSX owns!
Or even an Integra GSR would fit the bill nicely.......but I hate to say this, go for the Golf! haha The idea of driving 1000kms before filling up is too enticing to pass up:D

Yeah, I got mine yesturday. I was on the Oil Consumption test before. Back when "they had never seen this before" at the dealership. Amazing how they all the sudden recall the whole model year...

That's where I bought my car! However I do not take my car there for service. Not willing to book 1 week in advance for an oil change let alone a warranty recall :thumbsdow

I second the Golf/Jetta TDi. Great car. Reliable and freaken cheap on the fuel. Cleaner than a gas engine too.

dont get a golf TDI

my aunt and unlce just bought a 2003 model and have already spent $18 000 in repairs. the flywheel goes as often as the oil and costs 1100 dollars to repair. The turbo needed to be replaced, the brakes twicem the flywheel tiwce, clutch twice, etc..

and then when he drove it through a puddle it was out of commission for a while

Go with the Echo hatch, cheap (base model) and reliable.

Somehow I find it hard to believe they've spent $18,000 in repairs. I would assume that it is hard to buy a new VW without a warranty, but maybe I am wrong.

If the flywheel is going that often, maybe they should think about a different manufacturer for the part. How do you need to replace the clutch and brakes twice on a 2003 car? It seems incredibly unlikely.

Sounds exactly like my gf. She eventually went with a new Legacy eventhough there was a perfectly good silver 02 wrx for less. But she said "I dont wanna drive fast and plus it's a 5 speed... manuals are too much work!" crazy biach but she does her best work when her mouth is full... hehe.:bigpimp:

Friend has had one for less than a year now, over 50 000km, heavy hwy km, and the only thing they have done, is routine maintenance. No problems with the engine what so ever. WOuldnt a 2003 vw be covered under warranty for all those parts, except for clutch and brakes? If they just got the car, and their going through clutchs like mad, its not the cars fault that they dont know how to drive standard.

:bullshit:

rofl, thats what, one experience...every manufacturer has a lemon everyonce in a while, hell, look at the e46 BMWM3's
We own a 2002 TDI Golf with almost 30000km on it already and it hasn't had any problems other than a record 1150km on a tank.
And I'm sorry, burning through flywheels as fast as oil changes...sounds like a driver problem...especially seeing as how turbo/brakes/and clutch /flywheel are all items that will wear with impropper care...riding the brakes, and riding the clutch, bagging on the car, not letting the turbo cool down...seems like one of those 1-off scenarios, cause I have YET to hear of any major problems with any TDI's...

suffeks on beyond here has a chipped TDI that he races out at the track...no problems there and he beats the hell out of it.

I would like to hear what he has to say about the TDI myself. But come on guys, I know alot of you have had VW and think they are great cars. The problem is that they do have a questionable reliabilty. I am not trying to start wars here or say things like "my car is better than yours," but I have read alot of consumer reports and they don't get high for reliabilty. They get high ratings for driving and in general, but not for reliabilty. In fact they had a chart of number of problems per 100 vehicles and there was only one manufacturer out of about 40 that got lower. And that was Cadilac.

Some people live by them and some people have major problems with them. Even if there are alot more people out there that have had not one problem then the ones that have I still woudl not want to risk $25,000 on that.
