Change and gap your plugs, check for boost leaks, oxygen sensor, fuel filter, clean/change your air filter.

just look at your boost gauge it will tell you whether you are boosting or under vacuum. If your hitting boost at 2200 then it would be impossible not to boost

i have been looking at it... it is obviously a little more than 2200 ill keep my eye on it... regardless my bov is going off even when i don't hit boost according to the gauge on the dash...

Well actually you may see some boost around that number depending on your driving, but not full boost obviously. And not enough to contribute to your bad gas milage. full boost is 3500 ish i believe. Sorry about the confusion. I miss read your first post and its been a while since ive driven

Well there's no MAF on a Mr2, so that will be tough.... Good idea though. I ha da 2000 Celica GTS before and the MAF and had good results after cleaning it.

Mr2's have an AFM (air flow meter) which has a spring loaded flapper door to record airflow via tension.

MAFS (mass air flow sensors) have a wire or wires that runs current through it and records via air cooling that wire. So that would need cleaning if it were dirty.

But try teh rest and you should see some improvements.
