I'm looking for information on buying from a dealership.

We've never bought from one. Always private sales and are looking for a CRV or Legacy or similar. Found a few on-line but don't want to pay sticker if I don't have to.

Any tips on talking to sales guys? Sticker price, warranty, broken things?

I called one guy at a Volvo dealership and he told me they only do safetys. If a pwdl doesn't work they don't repair it. Only if its a safety issue. If they don't fix broken window relays then what else don't they fix that they would sell to unsuspecting ppl.

Why would you buy from a dealer? And pay GST. Big jerks do a good job at advertising nice "looking" vehicles that drag me in.

Are you looking at new or used?

I'm assuming used based on the fact that he's look for a CRV (which is made by Honda) or a Legacy (which is made by Subaru), but yet he spoke with a guy at a Volvo dealership.

To OP: Answer to "why would you buy used from dealership", well, the pro side could be dealerships being a one stop shop for different makes and models, different colours, "educated" sales staff, service such as taking care of your registration, pride in supporting local "small" business, support government by paying GST, etc...

The consumer has to outweight the pros and cons with buying used vehicles privately or through dealerships. There's no definitely answer to great deals.

good luck on your search

what's the big deal you pay GST at any other store you shop at? there's still many deals to be had if you find the right vehicle at a dealer

Dealer sell used vehicles because they have to not because they want to. They need to get rid of all lease returns and trade in which new sales customer left behind.

It's no different than private sell or any used car sales other than that it's a business and you have to pay GST.

If you're looking for used car with warranty, look for certified pre-own. I have seen a certified pre-own Lexus IS350 at a Pontiac dealership once.

Thanks all.

That's a good perspective.

I always thought that dealerships meant higher price tag (overhead and commission, the cost of running a business), GST, must most of all a guarantee that the vehicle you were buying was in good running order.

Floored me when he told me that they only do safetys.

Being a woman I feel powerless not knowing how to talk to car dealers as well as being treated differently. I was just looking for some perspective and knowledge so I would be better armed next time. (yes, I'm on my husband's beyond account).

Yes and no.

Dealers sell used cars because there is more profit in them than new ones.

Tried trading in your car? They give you thousands less than what you could sell it for privately.

Also, lease returns are bought at auction for far less than the current market value. Trouble is, the general public does not have access to these auctions.

Just prepare to talk to a lot of people. If the salesperson doesn't get the sale, he'll call in his manager and then you'll negotiate even more and he'll to get you to buy the car then and there. If you say that you are going they'll give you a lower price and keep doing that.
