Just heard that there is a huge power outage in eastern US and Canada. Cities like New York, Ottawa, Toronto, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, and more are out of power.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/08/14/power.outage/index.html

If you read the last sentence there..it says that the New York mayor recommends that everyone go home, open their windows and drink lots of fluids...

If this lasts into the night, wow, wouldn't want to be there.

I've been flipping between CNN and CTV and both are reporting completely different things. CNN claims that the outage was caused by a problem in Ottawa where they are reporting the problem started. CTV is reporting that the outage is caused by a fire in a NYC power plant that 'overloaded'. CNN makes no mention of the supposed fire, but they are reporting that one of NYC's plants performed an 'auto-shutdown' when the outage occured. Interresting...

Just woke up and heard about it on the radio. That's pretty freaking crazy, the anarchy that can result!

So the possiblity of it being a terror attack was ruled out??

There is no fire. The smoke that ppl reported were the power plants shutting down their boilers. It emits a lot of black smoke when they shut those babies down.

yah... pretty much. They claim it was the failure of some major power grid. But who knows...

Seven hours later, and officials are still arguing about what caused the blackout ....

It's the Canadian's fault !!
No , it's the American's fault !

Too funny.....

i'm suprised that there haven't been any major robberies yet, atleast thats what they said on the news. Wouldn't all the security systems all be out, the policeman patrolling the streets can only go so far.

At work we tend to watch/listen to TV, and this was on ALL day (we were watching CNN cus I hadnt seen the news in the last couple days).
I cant believe how many times it was emphasized that it was NOTHING TO DO WITH TERRORISM...

cnn just reported looting and vandalism in newyork, and other major cities

the source of the power outage is 2 failed nuclear power plants in the usa

Dam!! I'm so glad now that I'm up we have power again! Let me tell you all, in NYC, it was fucked up! We had street fights outside a store cause people were looting. My friend and I had to fight for the last slice of pizza and bag of chips at the pizzeria. It was dark as shit, kind of scary to see the entire city without lights, and when one can see stars from NYC at night, there is something wrong. And the worst?? It was so dam hot, so humid. No air conditioning. It was pretty messed up, I was here for 9/11 and this was in a way, sort of the same, people didn't really know what was happening, no food, cold beer. But things are better now, power is slowly getting back. i'll give the real news that CNN doesn't report, the street news. I saw these guys with bats come out of a car because they were pushed around in a store and didn't get respect so they wanted to give respect... that's how the huge street fight started. When I saw the bats, I was outta there. Guys with bats doesn't bring back good memories.

The reason was some power grid from Niagara went up, too much juice sucked from it.

It was pretty surreal. Out of a movie or something. No electricity anywhere for huge distances. Cell networks went down or had problems. Gas stations couldn't pump gas (no power). Traffic lights didn't work anywhere. Streets were jammed with cars. Subways lost power whereever they were.

Power came back on for me around 4 AM. The light in my hallway woke me up.

One good thing: the stars were visible for once where I'm at. Besides the damn heat.... oh and stupid-asses not knowing how to treat a major intersection with no traffic lights..... I didn't mind the power outage.

Only thing not working NYC is the subway and they don't expect that til tomorrow. Even 14 hours without A/C is too many hours without it. Sucks for the tourists who slept on the pavement over night. I feel for you.

I wonder if they did get a shot without the power though.

Everything is back and up here. Ontario may be a little slower because it takes time to start up the nuclear power plants. NYC bought surplus power from Quebec.
