Hey guys,
I am interested in getting into the stock market and was looking for a site that simulates it and I could play around with that first.
I know it was mentioned in another thread but I can't find it for the life of me.
Also, any advice for a newbie would be greatly appreciated. I took an intro to the stock market course at Mt. Royal a few years back so I know the basics but I definitely need some dusting up.
Any sites/books etc that you could recommend would be great. And how are the online trading sites like E-Trade Canada? Which would be a good one to get started?
Thanks!

Do you guys have any good links on getting started on selling / buying actual stocks? I looked at etrade canada, but their prices / trade is very high if your account isn't > 50k, or if you aren't extremely active in selling / buying.

I highly recommend that any beginning investor read a couple of books by Gordon Pape. The books aren't about stocks per-se, but they do give you a good idea about the concepts you need to build a portfolio, which really is what stocks should be a part of.
He also goes over Mutual funds pretty carefully, which is important.
Also, take a read through armchair millionaire, it has some good info.
I use Credential Direct, and so far I'm happy with it.

You can look at brokerage ratings at

Due to the pounding that most indexes have taken over the last year or so, right now is probably a good time to get into equities, funds and indices.
And for all beginning investors, I would recommend a conservative approach until you get your feet under you and understand all the investment options out there and their inherent risks.
Good luck!

The book is a bio on Jesse Livermore, one of the greatest traders to ever live. Not fictitious at all!
Great book. It sits on my desk beside my computer.
