Nissans CEO officially announces that the GT-R has set a new record for production cars by lapping the Nurburgring in 7 minutes 29 seconds.

CASCAIS, Portugal — Carlos Ghosn, Nissan president and CEO, announced today that at Germany's famed Nürburgring, on April 16-17, 2008, a production Nissan GT-R achieved a lap time of 7 minutes, 29 seconds, making it the fastest production car ever to lap the Nürburgring circuit. (Earlier, a GT-R posted a 7-minute, 38-second lap time, establishing it as one of the world's fastest production cars.)

Pretty amazing stuff. I remember in the other GT-R thread people were bashing the GT-R for using cut slicks... I'm not so sure that was what made the difference anymore. The R&T article comparing the GT-R, Z06 and 997 Turbo clearly shows Nissan did something right.

The GT-R somehow managed to destroy the other 2 cars (which were even) not from straight line speed, but all thru cornering! Here's a comparison, with lap timing charts, Steve Millen behind the wheel:

Nissan beat Porsche and Chevy at the physics game .

Amazing. Although I like the Z06 and the CGT much more than the GTR, the entrance of the new GTR is a good thing. This just means that performance car makers can no longer just get the championship given to them, their are others who have a fighting chance. This will only help enhance the marketplace.

It is really eating up other cars on the curves.
Seriously though, what is with near-4000lb sports cars?:dunno:
That car would be a rocket with 500lbs less.
If it wasn't heavy like the mustang, it would likely beat the vette in a drag race also.
They should have called this the gt-s, and made a lighter edition and kept the gt-r name on the racy one.
Still don't like the looks alot.
All-in all, amazing car though.

^ Heard some rumors about Nismo making a Spec-V and cutting out some fat to make it lighter on it's feet.

That would be the stake in the coffin for alot of $100,000+
cars that can't keep up with this thing as is.
Add more power, and it's over for all but the supercars.
Losing just 100lbs and adding 20hp would make it alot faster.
Here's hoping they do it.:burnout:

I drove the car in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue lol and it's faster than the F430 and the Z06 :D

Stake in the coffin as in what? Sales? Reputation? Desireability? I doubt it. People like what they like. E.g. A devote Porsche fan is not likely to sell his 911 for a GT-R, despite it being faster.

It will be interesting to see WHO the main GT-R buying demographic actually will be. Most of the people who will WANT it will probably be in a younger demographic that won't be able to afford it, at least in the beginning. (unless you're talking those Beyond "millionaires"... ;) ).

One thing is for certain, the GT-R is not going to sell based on it's LOOKS. It's like an ugly chick that happens to be very good in bed. :nut:

You'd be surprised. A lot of high rollers are trying to get the car. Remember that this car is in very limited numbers, so there's huge appeal there.

:werd:

Limited number and it looks like it's the "best" track car as well. Many people want the best and the GT-R is it right now.

"It has a coefficient of drag of just 0.27."

A Spec-V version would be incredible. Imagine if they dropped a few hundred lbs...

I don't agree 100%. People are not always smart. They want what is new and cool.
The GTR is the new thing. Nissan is not stupid, they only made a few of these things to increase hype, etc. The harder something is to get ahold of, the more it's wanted by the type of people who buy more expensive cars.
For the record, Porsche used to build cars that looked good and were nearly pure performance cars. That is why people still buy them, and the racing heritage that came with the performance mindset.
It's the same with Ferrari, only most feel they are still that way.
This will give Nissan back some performance "credit" that they have been missing for some time with the 350z. That will sell cars, and the GT-R will for sure steal some sales from the more expensive car dealers once they make more units and they get around at the tracks.

Yeah i've heard of that wow news. It just means that if we're considering a Porsche 911 or a Corvette Z06, Nissan offers a faster car for less money.

Why don't you just get an EVO X or STI as they offer similar AWD performance on a lower scale? The EVO X probably handles just as well as a GTR and with a Vishnu ROM tune at least puts it into 4.5 sec 0-60 territory. Not nearly as exclusive or fast though.

Or get a Vette Z06 since money isn't an issue.:)

Edmunds Insideline did their official test of a US Spec GTR. It set two new Insideline records.

Braking 60-0 in 98 feet
Acceleration 0-60 in 3.2 Seconds
