So we've got a 79 Monte Carlo with the 305 V8. At the moment it is pretty gutless (read:wont break traction on a dirt road). I was wondering what are some ways of getting the most out of these engines aside from the obvious (freeing up the exhaust etc). On the more drastic side I can think of swapping out for a new crate engine, or supercharging the existing motor, but those would be sometime in the future. Thanks guys

nothing. these motors dont support it very well aside from the obvious mods. for more power do a swap. really, i know you dont wanna hear it, but this is the most logical answer. good luck, i love mine even though the power isnt there.

If you're going to do up a monte I'm all for it but yeah, buy a super crate motor and swap it man. That'll be the best bang for the buck I think.

The 305 was not Chev's high in motors. It was made as a smog motor. Everything you want in performance is exactly opposite what this motor has. Bad heads with small valves, long stroke small bore. Just buy a crate motor, get a 4 speed auto 700R? and you are good. If you are lucky, look for an LS version of the small block out of a wreck with fuel injection. Then you will have power and gas mileage.
(think 10 litre/100km with 400 hp on highway of course)
