So...I bought a 92 Celica GTS and called the insurance companies today. I've had a 95 Neon for the last bit and it was just insured for liability. So I shifted the liability over to my Celica (no cost change) but then added fire, theft and vandelism to both cars as the neon will be in storage. My policy went up $650/year for the comprehensive minus glass. Now, at the same time my parents pay $100/year for comprehensive on 3 vehicles.

Why the hell is it more expensive for a 19 year old to store a car than a 45 year old??? WTF?

Looks like I'm going to be eating bread for this school year dammit.

Hahaha! Some advice from one starving student to another: Scour around Mac Hall for ketchup and mustard packets to put on your bread. They contain essential nutrients that will keep you alive throughout the semester! :D

Insurance sucks, it's like paying taxes. Give on money so other's mistakes can be paid for.

It's more like give money so the insurance companies can invest in shitty stocks on teh stock market. The thing is that if the insurance companies make money off the market then that's their profits. If they lose money then they raise premiums to pay for their losses. We're pretty paying for a select few to make their millions.

I think you just answered your own question. the 45 year old has up to a 29 years of insurance history (and by the looks of it a pretty good history), compared to the 3 years of insurance history that a 19 year old has.

From a veteran starving student, rice and soya sauce is really good too if you can't stand the bread and condiments :D

meh, get used to it, this is alberta. My insurance is getting a substantial hike this year. Hell, Last year I looked into insuring an Audi S4 and they wanted 4400, I just called yesterday and they want 6000 and I'm a year older now. I just shake my head, bend over and assume the position and wait patiently for my 25th bday.

You need to find a new insurance agent. I pay 3600/year for full coverage on my integra, and I have 5 speeding tickets.

I can understand your insurance history mattering for your actual driving but as far as storing a car goes I dont' understand. If my car is in my garage being stored next to my fathers car in the same garage, why is my car 6 times more likely to start on fire or get stolen?

Since it's not 6 times more likely why am I paying 6 times as much?

As far as actual driving goes statistics may show that I'm twice as likely to hit someone so for that I can understand paying twice the rate for but not storage.

In order to understand it, you'd have to go to university and take a degree in it. Insurance companies don't just randomly guess when it comes to setting rates. They setup actuarial tables that tell them how much risk they face, and their rates are set based on what it would take to assume the risk and still make a profit. Actuarial Science is actually pretty fascinating. The reason a 16 year old would cost more is clearly because a 16 year old has a much higher chance of making a claim. It really isn't rocket science. If you're 49 and have never made a claim, the chances you will are rather remote, and I am sure that this is supported by their tables.

If you would insure a 16 year old (with a bad record) and a 49 year old (assuming the 49 year old has a clean record) at the same rate, you better stay out of business.

I am in university and have taken statistics classes although I'm not in actuarial sciences. Once again, I understand what you're saying but I cannot fathom how it applies to car STORAGE. I can see a slight difference in the rate but not 6 times. If I walk down the street looking to steal a car it does not matter to me whether it is a 16 year old or a 49 year olds car as I will not be able to tell. Perhaps since 16 year olds drive sought after cars such as hondas and toyotas the rates would be slightly hight but I still can not understand 600%

edit: I also wanted to add that my parents record is worse than mine and they have made claims twice before as I have made none. So why the 600%?? Since it really isn't rocket science I dunno what I'm missing? or maybe you're missing the fact that insurance companies are just taking advantage of younger people because they can. Also, rates only do with claims a little bit. Even if accidents decrease and settlements decrease our rates may increase due to poor investment choices ie. stock market made by our insurance companies.

edit again: I'm many beers into my wednesday night so excuse the grammar and spelling.

Alberta insurance is gay. Privatization is gay. If the government ran it, we'd all be paying at LEAST 50% less.

I was in such a predicament awhile back and chose NOT to go through insurance. Instead I took the loss straight up so my record would still be clean. I did some math and the resulting insurance increase over the next five years would have been much more than the insurance company's compensation for my stupidity.

Is the car registered under your name?

I'm 19 and I pay $5,400/year - $450/month. That's one way insurance with fire, vandal. and theft. I used to pay $40 bucks a month when i was 16 with a clean record. The insurance company says with my current insurance 'set-up' it doesen't matter if i drive a 1982 corolla wagon, or a ferrari I'll be paying the same amount.

the joys of being a chick!

I am 25, no speeding tickets, one claim (property damage), I have a full time listed associate driver (male).
I drive 4 door so I think that helps my rate some:
$138 per month full coverage.

But - to be fair, I have received some quotes as high as $8K a year, just gotta shop around to find the best deal.
