Teen charged with driving 239 km/h in 80 km zone

It was a wild weekend on Ontario roads as police charged 163 people with street racing including one teen who was clocked doing 239 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

The 17-year-old Barrie resident was charged by the Ontario Provincial Police at 1:50 a.m. Monday after they spotted a Lincoln LLS travelling north on Highway 26.

Police say four other teens -- all under the age of 18 -- were in the car at the time.

According to OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley, most of the charges laid over the weekend were laid against young men in their early 20s or late teens.

Under the province's street racing laws, any driver caught going 50 kilometres over the posted speed limit will automatically have their car impounded and have their driver's licence suspended for seven days. They also will face a minimum fine of $2,000.

About 300 accidents were reported in the GTA over the long weekend and police say eight people died on the road. None of the traffic fatalities occurred in the GTA.

OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said police did not see a spike in incidents this year because of a heavier police presence.

"We're far more visible, far more aggressive and far more able to enforce," Fantino told the Toronto Star.

225 governor - if he can get this proven by a cert. mechanic, may be thrown out due to faulty radar

239 in a Lincoln? I didn't even think that car could go that fast. Too bad they didn't plough into a street post and remove themselves from the gene pool.

Heh, that won't work.

A few years back a buddy of mine went to traffic court to fight a ticket and the guy before him had been charged for doing some insane speed (~170km/h or something, I forget the exact details) on HWY 63 (100km/h speed limit). He tried to use the governor excuse "But your honor, my car can't even go that fast... its governed to only 160km/h". The judge just replied "160... 170... makes no difference to me. GUILTY!"

Like said before, he could have been going downhill.

The car was probably clocked going down a hill or something to hit 239

I don't see how the kid can dispute the charges though; under Ontario's new laws, they seize your car and can suspend your license if you're caught going 50 over the speed limit. Doesn't matter if he was going 130, 225, or 239, he's still guilty under that law, right?

A simple performance chip would have taken care of the speed limiter, and some cars (no idea about the LS) have a raised speed limiter if ordered with a sport package that includes Z-rated tyres.

correct, but if the car cannot travel as fast as the radar has detected, is that not faulty equipment?

I have court on Friday for a 156 in a 100 zone. There was a truck passing in front of me, the officer was 4 cars back by himself radaring - snagged my 180sx under the truck (radar takes the largest travelling object). My plugs were f'd, the car was running in limp mode (have a signed letter from a registered mech.) and the car could rev over 4g's (go over 140).

I cant see the judge use the ol 'GUILTY' when its facts from a certified red seal mech. and multiple cars involved.

correction: could not rev over 4000

haha I hope it happens. Life would be ironical for cop if it would be a criminal offense to operate a faulty radar

"OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said police did not see a spike in incidents this year because of a heavier police presence." - that means that the number of incidents was not reduced, either ?

I have the Bel STi Driver. I drive out to Manitoba to visit my family, and they have laws against RDs, and use the Spectre to catch users. The STi is completely undetectable, and it's the ONLY one on the market that carries that distinction. It costs a wee bit more, but its range rivals the V1 and the Escort X50 (Escort and Beltronics are the same company).

You don't need arrows to understand where a radar threat is if you've got half a brain.
