View Full Version : what 4 door high powered sedan?

BigMass

so now i'm looking for a 4 door high powered sedan. Looking to spend up to $30k.

Factors:

Price/performance (woudlnt mind giving up a bit in terms of performance if i can save 10k)

Reliability (doesnt need to be a Lexus but shouldnt be a lemon with a reputation of breaking down)

0-60 (5.5 ish seconds or lower would be a nice indication of the type of power/torque i'd be looking for)

BMWs and G35s are obvious choices but, living in Calgary, i fall asleep just thinking of BMWs and G35s.

Here are some cars i found for sale currently that seem to be at decent prices.

300C SRT-8
http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detailinfo.aspx?ID=32058581&pgno=1&srt=7

CTS-V
http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detailinfo.aspx?ID=32132531&pgno=1&srt=1

Lincoln LS (The car was reviewed quite favorably from what i've read. And a good price at that)
http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detailinfo.aspx?ID=30139722&pgno=2&srt=1

Anyone have any opinions on those cars or in this segment? I know the G8 is coming out but i can't wait and i rather buy used over new anyways to save money.

Anything but the BMW

Each car has there own issues and you should check out consumerreports.com before making any decision.

Quick, reliable, reasonable on gas and AWD!

An LS is a full second away from where you'd like it to be performance wise, though the handling is really good with 50/50 weight distribution. A new Malibu, Saturn Aura or Pontiac G6 with the 3.6L V6, will whoop an LS all day long.

Another good Otion will be the Pontiac G8 when it comes out.

Personally i'd opt for a nice used SRT8, Maggie, Charger or 300. I'm biased though as I have been searching for the right 5.7 Hemi equipped LX car for awhile now.

My personal opinion on each:

Lincoln LS: Nice car, good ride, but you're in the wrong ballpark for power. The LS only has ~300 HP, and as someone said, is a good second away from your target 0-60 time. That said, if I was looking for a reasonably priced comfortable luxury car with a bit of performance, the LS would be right up there on my list. Nicest interior of the three.

Cadillac CTS-V: My favorite of the three you put forth. The Corvette-sourced LS6 has plenty of easily accessible aftermarket, and has proven to be a solid performer. Handling is pretty good, and is a sharp looker without being over the top. Only one available with a manual transmission.

Chrysler 300C SRT-8: The most powerful, and funnily enough, my least favorite. The power is pretty savage and impresses in a straight line, but put a corner in front of it and things get pretty mediocre. I've driven them numerous times, and they just don't seem to have the special something to really make driving it fun. And a stock 425 HP and all you give us is a 5 speed automatic? Bitch please.

Other suggestions:

Audi S4: Very nice cars, the handling is great thanks to the Quattro AWD (though it does tend to understeer at the limits, being FWD bias). Great interior, available manual transmission. The TT motor is easily coaxed into making more power (hooray turbochargers!), and the 4.2L V8 versions have excellent grunt throughout the rev band.

Mercedes C-Class AMG: Good power, very nice interior appointments, classy appearance... but it still handles like a Mercedes. Not sure if these were available with a good ol' fashioned manual.

And now the part everyone knew was coming....

BMW M5 E39: Bite your tongues until the end, I'm going to be harshly critical of my own car here. I don't see many of these around, and I don't mind giving a neutral review on it, and with prices coming down, now wouldn't be a bad time to start considering one.

The good: It's got great power, makes a fantastic noise, has a nicely appointed interior, handles very nicely when you've got the Sport mode turned on, rides very comfortably and relaxed with you don't, the Active Seats are great for long trips, great throttle response, pretty decent reliability, very safe (front/rear head & side airbags, and front airbags) and it doesn't jump out and say "LOOK AT MEEEEE!" like the current generation M-series. Very 'under the radar', which is what made it a more attractive choice for me.

... However: The clutch is sourced from the 282 HP 540i and is considered an achilles heel, so expect to be replacing it with a better unit if you aren't very nice to your clutches, maintenance isn't cheap, the fuel economy rivals most half-ton trucks (my current HWY/CITY average is 17.1 MPG), the steering is recirculating-ball like the 540i so the feedback isn't as precise as most would like, mine has a strange rattle in the rear interior deck that can only be corrected by tearing the bloody thing apart, there's no center console space beyond a 3"x3"x3" cubbyhole for an oddly square-shaped pack of gum, the German-engineered cupholders are useless, the 6-disc magazine is in the trunk, the navigation system can be finicky (and if you've got the CD-based Nav, the display is fairly primitive), the display for the OBC in the dash have been known to have dead pixels from time to time, the factory audio systems (save for the M-Audio) are rubbish, even the M-Audio isn't GREAT, the engine will normally use up about a quart of oil between services, and lastly, buying one will cause all the sheep on Beyond to regard you as a douche, even if you're not.

Having said all those negatives, it's rather easy to look past those things once you're in it. I will say that it is one of the most well balanced cars I've ever driven. I can take it on a road-trip in a heart-beat, it feels very confident at incredibly illegal speeds on the highway, and it's very easy to drive around town. Put your foot down, and you feel like you're driving an M3, but without the popped collar or the shaved head (Sorry rage. :D). Overall, it's a very relaxing car to drive, and in my opinion, while they're not for everyone, you're cheating yourself if you don't at least take a test drive in one.

Max price is $30k...you won't get a B6 S4 for that. They have come down in price though...for $35k you can get a higher km car or maybe a US car? Most are in the $40-50k range.

Actually there is a sweet S4 wagon in Edm thats only $33k for some reason, might want to check that one out. It's on Canada trader.

FWIW, I own both a stock Legacy GT and a lightly modded C5 Corvette hardtop (which is not only lighter than the Legacy but has at least 100 more horses as well) but I have to admit that the Legacy GT can hold it's own against my C5... until it hits highway speeds.

thanks for the ideas. Yeah i really like the Lincoln in a lot of ways, but the power is just not where i want it to be. The SRT-8 is up there, but the thing that bothers me time and time again is the size. It's just so damn huge. I'm not used to maneuvering such big cars in and out of traffic, or trying to park the monster. I love it's looks, only if it were smaller.

The CTS-V is a better size for me, however i was leaning towards an auto. I've driven manual all my life and i'm sick of rowing gears in traffic. Another thing is people keep saying the CTS-V would always be in and out of the shop. I definitely wouldn’t want that. But i do like the car.

B5 Audi S4 is a consideration if i can get one thats been taken care of in good shape and reliable.

540i with a sport package wouldnt be a bad idea per say. The M5 is sweet but out of my price range (i dont like to finance)

The STI would be out. Even though it’s a 4 door it isn’t luxury/quiet enough for my purpose.

There are a lot of good choices, i'm just looking for that perfect one.

+1 for an SRT8. I've had mine for about 2 months and absolutely love it. Mine is a Magnum and yes there is a bit of body roll in a corner but the straight line speed makes up for it.

They are actually 50:50 (B6 S4's, B7's are 60 rear 40 front).

They do understeer a bit though, but a $200 sway bar will get them pretty close to neutral. The 60:40 ones are apparently more balanced stock.

Big problem with the audi's is the clutch. My buddy has a B7 S4 and the stock clutch is pretty crappy.

Also keep in mind with Audi you get to pay for fun things like $3000.00 clutch jobs and wait 1 month to get your car in for service!

The S60R is another nice suggestion i saw someone make. However i'd have to import that because in the states you can get what's $30k used up here for $20k. I'm sick of throwing my money away

That CTS-V is probably from US judging by the palm trees in the backround.

About the SRT-8 cars, I saw a stock magnum srt8, last friday, running low to mid 14s at 96-98 ish at RC. Not bad I guess for a heavy car on a pretty crappy DA night.

Congrats on the CTS-V. Good choice! How do you like it so far?

I miss mine so much. The low rpm "misfire" is normal.
Hope you have much fun with yours as I did with mine.

I looked every where for wheels and there is not much other Foose speedster 6's (yuck) and a few other ugly wheels for that bolt pattern.

You planning to take yours to the track? I always wanted to autoX mine but never did get the chance.

Nope... not according to Motor Trend, they recorded 5.6 seconds 0-60 for the 540i with 6spd.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/oneyear/112_9905_1997_bmw_540i/specs_overview.html

Car & Driver even got 5.5 seconds 0-60 times from the 540i... likely due to the ample 310 ft-lb of torque, and not the 282hp! (the '02-'03 540i had slightly more with 290hp and 324 ft-lb).

The M5 hasn't got much more torque at 368 ft-lb, and is only a second faster 0-60 (4.6)... I'd say that qualifies as "almost as fast".

Also, the M5 isn't as reliable and costs a hell of a lot more than the 540i on the used market .

The car so far is amazing. A big change form the S2000. But obviously that’s the reason I got it.

Pros:
The useable power is far better for everyday driving.
The luxury and comfort is nice
the interior is not bad for a domestic
the handling is great.
the engine is superb.
Blows away the majority of other vehicles on the road.
4 doors, lot of room.

Cons:
Vague steering, too much assistance.
Too many electronics controlling stupid shit I’ll never use.
Car is a little too big (scale 0.85 would be perfect heh)
Shifting is super sloppy compared to the S2000
Stupid annoying safety features that won’t shut up. The car chime is driving me nuts.
Steering wheel is way too big. Feels like I’m driving a bus.
6x115 bolt pattern

The pros are far more substantial for me than the little nit picky cons I can come up with.

BTW The 540i was on my short list but the thought of owning one just didn’t excite me. I’m sure it’s a great car.

hehe. the cons are mainly just minor niggles. Overall i love the car. Funny part is i bought the car sight unseen without having ever actually sat inside a CTS-V or really looked at one close up. But good cars are good cars and easy to shop for in that sense. I knew the CTS-V was a good car without actually having to drive it. I'm glad it didn't disappoint.

PS That video is funny!!! Too bad they really fuck over the American muscle cars on that show by testing them in the wettest conditions imaginable. Just like the Viper. It's like they're scared of these cars running times faster then their European counterparts. Obviously they dont control the weather but dang, it sure seems that way lol.

With your E60 M5? No shit! I'm talking about the E39 M5.
Plus, when have you read 0-60 times quoted in any magazine by non-professional drivers under slipery conditions?

Look, all I'm saying is that the E39 540 is a very fast, commonly over looked sport sedan... and I also see a M5 in your avatar!

I have a 2006 CTS-V. It has the LS2 motor. Great car, even good gas mileage on the highway: 10.3 litre/100km at 120K.
Just came back from Vegas, where interstate curves and 55mph signs, I cruised past everyone at about 85 and my wife didn't yell at me. (she didn't know how fast we were going)
Most people buy them out of USA as I did, much cheaper.
Check cadillacforums classified for members selling their cars.

Whoops, just saw you bought one. Number one mod: Change the shifter and the bushings, makes night and day difference. You can shut off traction control and Stability control if you want to wrap it around a pole or hit a curb.
(Check GSL, they are repairing one that hit a curb)
For other tips etc see above mentioned site.

Funny you should mention that hehe. I got a UUC shifter kit and bushings on the way along with a set of black Team Dynamics wheels from Lindsay Cadillac.

Going to go 245/45/18 front and 275/40/18 rear. What do you think.

Im also thinking of geating a Magnaflow exhaust for sound and looks because the stock one is getting raggedy.

well i took my car to work twice now and today i found out it got keyed for no reason. I mean i parked far from anyone in between two lines perfectly. Nobody knows me or knows the car. And bam it was keyed for no reason. I'm so pissed i could murder someone. I mean seriously, wtf? It's the first time in my 15 years of driving this has every happened. What luck.

That's brutal. People who key cars are the biggest chicken-shit losers around.

My wife's car was keyed twice last year within a couple of days. Sucks.

What lousy luck. I take great pains to park as far away from things as I can. I would have thought those jerks wouldn't have known what the car was. Usually is pretty stealthy big 4 door sedan with little in the way of high performance stuff showing.
As far as tires, that combo works well, I'll probably do that when mine need replacing. Buy Michelin PS2 for best performance. pricey but good. For other info see the forums.
Exhaust, Magnaflow, Corsa and B&B are popular. Can buy Corsa from Lindsay. Don't know about the others.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Lexus GS series of cars. Good power, decent looks, nice interior, reliable.

Agreed, I picked up 6 when I got mine in Seatle. they're $500/tire here $280 in the states.

I smell a CTS-V meet, but lets wait till my diff is fixed, its en-route from Lindsay Cadillac right now :) Word of advice, dont Hard-launch your CTS-V at the drag strip :banghead:

point taken. I don't drag race anyways, however i go to the road course once in a while.

Road course is what these things were built for!

I would be interested to see how well a CTS-V does up against a C5 or even C6 vette on the road course.

When i went there a year ago with Jay Pringle i saw he sold his moded Audi S4 and got a CTS-V. I never saw him track it. I'm sure some on this forum have. How has it been holding up?

I'd track my S2000 or RSX Type S until the cows came home due to the crazy reliability, but i wonder how well the CTS-V would hold up under the same conditions.

PS: Those with CTS-Vs out of warranty, where do you take them to get serviced? No way im going to a dealership with an out of warranty vehicle. Thanks

And congrats for the newly aquired beast on wheels. Those things are definately sweet. And for that bolt pattern that sucks ass big time.

I always do my own work on cars so I can't help with that.
Just a note though, the Sheriff's dept does have an Unmarked Dodge Charger patrol car. White with Black wheels. Really homely in that combo. And no, I didn't have a business dealing with it. They are next door to my shop.

Congrats on the purchase, seems like you got it for a good price.

I feel sorry for the poor guy who bought that new - paid like ~$50,000 to drive it for a few years. He could have probably rented it for 4 years for less lol. The CTS V is also a much better car than the Lincoln LS. I can honestly say that Lincoln is in my top 3 worst cars I've ever driven, hands down. That thing was atrocious in every way IMO. Enjoy the new car, I think you made a good decision

Love my CTS-V, just picked it up a couple weeks ago and look forward to driving it every morning :D

I'd be interested in testing it out on the track, however I've no experience with that sort of thing. Is there anything at Race City that allows for that type of thing? I'm in the same area as Race City so it's pretty convenient if so.
