View Full Version : 1999 Swift 010c
So I wanted to buy something different that you don't hear about or see very often. I was looking hard at 348/F355 Challenge cars and other factory modified exotics and I ended up with something I never even THOUGHT I'd own....at anytime in my life.
Well here is what I have tucked away in my garage now.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/CClogo1.jpg
It's a 1999 Swift 010c, 1 of 15 built (not sure how many are left). This is chassis number 004 It was originally used by Newmann Haas and then by Rocketsports. It's last duty was a promotional piece for the '07 Las Vegas GP and the never fulfilled Arizona GP. Now it's sitting in my garage waiting for major surgery to implant a VG for some reliable go power. I will post updates as they happen.

The list of To-Do's is quite large but I feel it will be well worth it in the end. The plan as of now is to run a single turbo VG with either an EMS or Zem. The biggest hurdles will be finding a clutch/fabricating a flywheel and getting a VG to rev high enough to attain a respectable top speed. The dry sump will also be a good chunk of time/$$$. The smaller jobs will be fitting shocks and brake calipers and completeing the clutch and brake pedal assemblies. A set of belts needs to be fitted (the mounts are already there) along with a seat pad.

Today I worked on gutting the data aquisition wiring/sensors from the tub. I also moved all the pedals forward to accomodate my long legs. Then I installed the clutch fork and TO bearing back into the gearbox. I also test fit a clutch.

This is the frame that will hold the Yamaha R1 bike engine and connect the tub to the gearbox (not complete but you get the idea). The square tubing is 1.25 X 1.25 X .120" wall. The flat bar is 1.5 X .375".

The housing has a counterbore to hold a 47mm OD bearing and a 62mm OD bearing. There is a sleeve between the two bearings so that the thrust load (from disengaging the clutch) is shared by both bearings.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c359/RobZ90TT/Champ%20Car/drivetrainparts008.jpg
When I welded the sprocket to the coupler the splines shrunk and the sprocket would not fit the R1 output shaft. I machined the splines away and machined a counterbore for the second sprocket to center in and bolted two together to complete the coupler.

The 24 tooth sprocket (not pictured) will drive the 14 tooth driven sprocket for a 1.714:1 ratio. This will provide a geared top speed of 172 mph though there is currently not sufficient power to push through the drag created by the roadcourse aero package. By changing the gear selection in the R1 gearbox the overall gearing can be adjusted to suit different driving situations.

Sunday I removed the gearbox to swap the 3-plate clutch for a 4-plate version. I was not getting full disengagement with the thinner pressure plate on the 3-plate version because the clutch fork was bottoming out on the wall of the opening in the side of the case.

OK here is another video from one of the other participants. That's my old room mate going by in his modified 951. It pains me to watch the road cars pass me but it was a shakedown afterall.

I visited Inde Motorsports Ranch in Willcox, AZ for the second time (first time was in the Viper for the Grand Opening) and the Swift came along. The plan was to put the car on display next to the track owners' '91 Lola. Well that didn't happen, instead.......

As much as I want to let it hang out I keep thinking about the lack of (read NONE) spare parts available for this car and it slows me right down.
