For some reason, the headlights are reminding me of the Batwing. The gold wheels on that orange colour are :barf:

Aside from that, it looks cool... interesting they're using a naturally aspirated 2.0L making 220hp @ 6500rpm. I thought they'd use the turbo motors.

also very surprised they are not using a turbo motor. and very very bumed out we are only getting the subi version :(

2L NA? Torque less.

Why not stick with stock 2.5 from Subaru?

I thought they had decided internationally to leave the 4WD to Suby and the RWD as a Toyota; new Celica? :dunno:

Exactly. The tuning options are huge for that 2.5 T engine too.

maybe with the fuel prices they decided that a n/a high rev engine is good. specially if its almost as powerful as the rex in stock form.

just like the N/A STi impreza proto.

i like it looks sporty and should be a good overall car but i have to agree on the batwing headlights..

Hope this ain't the new celica they were talking about.

Don't like the look of this one and I want the toyota version.

That's probably not official since it looks like Toyota & Subaru just photoshopped the 2008 Honda Accord Coupe HFP... and they call it their new car? The front end also looks like the the old TL-S A-Spec.

http://paddocktalk.com/news/html/modules/ew_filemanager/07images/ptalk/roadtest/honda/accord/3.jpg

I've seen a few of the Accord Coupes with the HFP kit and the car is just gorgeous.

The idea is probably to generate new sales for Subaru. If they put the turbo engine in the new coupe they run the risk of WRX buyers crossing over to the coupe which won't help overall sales.

I would rather have the Toyota version also since local Subaru service is so poor.

Interesting. I love the look of the car, but I am not impressed by the 2.0 N/A boxer engine. I also find it quite hard to believe that it will make 220hp @ 6500 rpm. Maybe @ 7500+, which will basically be another s2000 IMO.

this looks like a legacy coupe, well as much as i can see of it,

I like the look of the orange one, i wonder what the back looks like..

but i doubt it will stay 2.0L NA, turbo is having it's stage time in North America cause we missed out in the early 90's. But the production is stated for 2011, who knows what kinds of financial crisis the world will be in in 2 years.
:dunno:

edit: i just remembered that the AE86 revival rumors stated :
Concept Car Specs:

1. Under 4m long and 1.75m wide.
2. Measuring at 1.35m tall.
3. Engineers were instructed to keep the weight below 1,000 kg
4. Will be powered by 120 hp, 1.5L 2NZ-FE engine.
5. Cheap RWD drivetrain will be provided by Toyota’s new partner, Fuji Heavy Industries or better known as Subaru.

Subaru's old ass engines are already ghetto in today's world since they're struggling to provide decent fuel economy and emissions control, so I don't see how they can still be put into a car slated for 2010 (?) and not only that, but a small Toyota. Toyota's brand is huge into enviro-friendliness, especially its small cars. There's no way this ogre of a boxer engine could ever make it, and if it did, it'd be a terrible decision by Subyota.

They've been using and modifying the same old design for many years, kind of like what Mitsu did with the 4G63. It's time for a change, but damn Subaru is putting their R&D money into developing diesel engines right now. How about some direct injection gasoline engines!??!

That depends on who is building it. Subaru has had a whack of problems recently from the 08 2.5 turbo engine stop sells and recalls due to bearing issues which has now reared it's head in 09's. To the 08 STI blowing ring lands and second gear failures in the 6-speed. Not to mention having to repaint a bunch of cars due to paint turning into sandpaper from rock chips.

Any hint of a reason why?

Maybe it might take away from Corolla sales :dunno: gawd that would've been good news, the less Corollas out there the better.

From what he said it's because of scion.

I saw an article on Autoblog.com that it would likely show up in the states as a SCION. That combined with the rumblings lately that SCION could be coming to Canada is a good sign.

Eleanor

Yeah I read the article about them marketing it as a Scion over here as well. It would make sense, Toyota has nothing close to "sporty" in their line up and a RWD Scion would sell tons with the <25 crowd.

Both your engine references here are 2.5l turbo engines. Not what this car will have. The transmission may be revised before production and it has alot less power going through it. Also toyota is supposed to be taking care of planning and quality control so I'm sure it will be built well.

Agreed. Given how many vehicles they move in a year, the number of failures as a percentage is still very low. I'm not a fan of Toyota styling but I'd happily accept the current levels of reliability.

The build quality of my FJ is junk compared to that of my mr2. It's amazing how much care and attention went into building that car. The materials, fit and finish are second to none compared to todays modern toyotas.

Sure they have slipped some recently becasue of their exspansion but according to your articles you provided as proof Toyota is still ahead of... well everyone except Honda and Subaru (funny, Subaru is the car maker they are teamed up with). Sure their trucks are shitting the bed but one little window problem with the matrix's and carolla's is not a sign of bad build quality. One article you provided said that Lexus got replaced as top spot by Toyota themselves.

You appear to be downplaying their their trucks and SUV's for some reason and focusing on the Matrix and Corolla. Their trucks and SUV's account for almost 1/2 of the entire North american lineup. For a company that has been marketed for the quality of their vehicles, that's a big deal.

If faulty windows on the Corolla/Matrix line is not a sign of bad built quality, then the 'rattles and creeks' that develop for some North American cars shouldnt be considered as a sign of bad build quality either then.

back on topic... I'll be surprised if it comes here as a Toyota car - it would make sense to see it as a Scion since it appeals to a more 'younger' crowd.

Nothing to get excited about. Cars have been pushed back and may never see the light of day;

Toyota/FHI To Delay Jointly Developed New Sports Car Until After 2012

Toyota has decided to delay the production and merchandising of the new compact sports car, which is being jointly developed with Fuji Heavy Industries. The original plan was to start production by the end of 2011 and to launch the product in Japan. The postponement period is still pending but the launch will be sometime after 2012, depending on market conditions. Both companies have worked closely together since April, and the sports car project was supposed to be one of pillars of the collaboration, the domestic market conditions have become more severe. It was judged that securing sufficient sales is very difficult at this time.

In April, Toyota increased their share in FHI from 8.7% to 16.5% and embarked on a project to jointly develop a compact FR sports car. The plan was for Fuji Heavy Industries to construct a new plant exclusively for the production of the sports car. Production was set to start by the end of 2011 and marketed under both brands. Total production units planned was 100,000-150,000 vehicles per year.
